Favorite Architect or Building

a new stunning masterpiece by Zaha Hadid in Dubai inspired by the natural landscape of the region,dunes..
operahouse_h.jpg

a combination opera house-playhouse in Dubai, it will also house a performing arts school, a luxury hotel, and a gallery exhibition space. Inspired by dunes, the design is sensuous and fluid, rising to form double peaks that will be the two performance spaces.

i just read this past weekend's sydney morning herald supplement good weekend...the cover story was on architect jeremy edmiston (who happens to be fashion designer leona edmiston's brother!. :p)....he is from sydney...now based in new york....did anyone else read it?...seems to be a really interesting guy and i loved the concept for the burst*003 home which they've been chosen to recreate on a lot next to the museum of modern art in nyc. i found the article really interesting and quite inspiring...check it out if you get the chance, i'd recommend it. :flower: he worked with douglas gauthier on this home (his business partner until last year i think).

here is the original home...

At 5 in the morning, my family dropped off my grandmother at DIA, Denver International Airport.

In the dark, the airport lights up gorgeously -

^ ah yes, i've flown through there a lot. it's surprisingly far from the city.

Here is another amazing building that will be built in the Middle East.

http://bustler.net/index.php/articl...ter_for_knowledge_and_culture_competition_in/

In competition with some of the world’s greatest architects, Snøhetta has won the competition about designing Saudi Arabia’s new Cultural Center. Saudi Aramco – the world’s largest oil company – is the client.

King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz set the cornerstone for the Cultural Center which will house a museum, library, theater, cinema and more. The building reflects the history of oil in Saudi Arabia and is different from the country’s architectonic traditions with its abstract and spectacular form.
Along with five other internationally know architect offices, Snøhetta participated in the competition and was chosen in preference to famous names as Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas.

I would love to travel to Dubai in a few years for holiday. I think it would be an amazing experience to look at all the architecture. It seems that everything there will be very modern and futuristic.

and not just dubai but the UAE... the ferrari theme park in abu dhabi looks like it wil be amazing... NEED FOR SPEED, anyone?

As amazing as Dubai (or the UAE for that matter) is going to be, there's a good chance it might not be filled up. Almost every city has been built upon and renovated for hundreds of years, never has there been such a huge city created from scratch and designed, I've never been but surely there are way more living spaces than actual people?
It's great in concept, but the only way I can see Dubai filling up with the worlds richest and most exclusive is if a lot of large companies re-locate their main headquarters to Dubai, then people will follow for jobs. I don't know of this happening, although I did hear there was going to be a fashion island :D but do you think it'll be able to compete with the current fashion capitals?
I hope Dubai does work out though.

Sorry if this isn't allowed in this thread.

I thought the whole plan was to turn Dubai into the world's premier tourist attraction, since they figured their country's wealth in oil will eventually dry up (literally...)

i have a friend who is working as an architect in Dubai atm.
she claims that buildings are sold to clients when they are still in the conceptual stages, because they all seem to want statement pieces.
quite interesting when you think about other cities where planning and zoning regulations would make all these things ridiculously hard to get approved.

i am really inlove with Shigeru Ban's designs lately.
they're really elegant.
i really enjoy the use of fabrics and their adaptability.

all the spaces he creates are just so clean, but at the same time really exciting. i think a lot of Japanese architects are really talented in that they are able to keep it simple yet still have a single, subtle element to their designs that really gives the spaces they create a certain quirk or personality.

his work with paper and cardboard is exceptional too. quite forward thinking.

do u guys think architects have as much 'personal style' as do other designers for other fields/artists... ie. you can sense the difference btwn a oscar de la renta to a prada...

shigeru ban seems to stand out --i feel materials are an integral part in the creating of his works

Matay- those are stunning homes!!! Wow! I love that curtain house, I'd love to be able to walk through that home and spend a few days there.

It has to be the Chrysler building designed by William van Alen for me.
It's nearly eighty years old and yet it still looks ultra-modern.
It's just absolutely stunning.
I'm such a push-over for art deco.
