French Style!

Did you watch it on the internet? The clip is only about 2 minutes long

Where did you see it, marylauda? On the Sundance Channel? I've been watching so many older French movies (mostly Godard) recently and would love to catch this some time, as many of the leading ladies are credited.

I saw it on the Sundance channel; I tivo-d it last week and watched it...I really enjoyed it.

Does anyone know the typical make up routine French women do? I'm trying to adopt a more natural look, but I'm at a loss on how to look put together but not overdone!

healthy clear clean skin, lipstick and mascara (only on the top lashes).

There's a thread around here called something like "Sans Makeup, s'il vous plait" that talks about how French women achieve "the natural look." (Hint: with lots of makeup ;)) The trick is in the colors you choose.

lol, i always hate that whole how to use a pile of makeup to look natural thing.

^ esp when looking unnatural can be managed with so little ;)

I appreciate the look, but personally like a little more drama in my makeup.

Sheer lipstick in a color like Rum Raisin is the kinda thing you'd be looking for ... Matte eyeshadow, there's a pretty MAC color called Dove-feathers that would be perfect ...

i went into mac a few years ago looking for an eye shadow. i don't wear any makeup but once every few years i buy a product. anyhoo, i told the sales person that i wanted a heavy, french eye. he had no idea what i was talking about. he showed me some things, then i picked a dark charcoal and put it on my upper lid, along the lashes, as if it were a liner, but thick. he was very taken aback that he hadn't originally understood and thought it looked intensely french. mission accomplished, i looked french to me and to this makeup artist. but how far off the mark i may have been, who knows. funny how we have these ideas of what x or y looks like. and that so often just comes from us, the stories we tell ourselves about x or y, that build up an image.
i totally understand what you have in mind with the dove feathers shadow. see, i pictured an intense upper lash line, and you mention a matte, sophisticated pale look, and both ring true for me as "french" or my idea of "french."

i thought this might fit best into this thread...

it's an editorial called "allure parisienne" but i think it accurately mirrors a lot of real french streetstyle and personally i LOVE it..
photographer is benjamin nitot and it was published in l'officiel in sept 05..
credit nitot..

it reminds me a lot of charlotte gainsbourg...

enjoy...

I love all the outerwear in this ed. I adore the accessories, and actually everything else as well. I like how it was shot and edited to look like a series of streetstyle candids. C'est intelligent et chic!

^ I like that she's older, her face shows a little life under her belt ... which is one thing the French totally get ^_^ When a model is 14, yes, she's beautiful, but she's sometimes so completely *unformed* that you feel like a voyeur just looking at her ...

^^^that's why i want to know her name, so i can look her up and get an age. i like her real (but impossible) beauty too.
