French Style!

I like french style, i think alot of what they wear is pulled off with their confdence because if you wear a stunning outfit its not going to look its best if you're slouched in a corner avoiding everyone!

Has anyone read French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating For Pleasure by Mireille Guiliano?? It's getting lots of press.

She was interviewed on television in the UK wearing an off-the-shoulder cashmere sweater with a huge roll-over boat-necked collar that made her look as if she had NO arms !!!

VERY chic !!! :innocent:

trust me, most of the people here really don't know how to dress.I think one of the things for that is that the shops are really terrible, and the buyers there just buy all the "safe" items, because they think otherwise people wouldn't buy anything.and then everybody buys all the same clothes, and so on.

-being oh-so-rock-and-oh-so-unique:
messy, torned and dark/shock colour clothing (not gothic if it may sound like that),lots of makeup in different shades, black/brown/shock colour dyed hair.second-hand and H&M.and they all think they're so unique, although every other person dresses like that.

-"Goths"
so, they listen Evanescence, HIM and Nightwish, and then they go to H&M and buy lots of black clothes and matching jewellery and tons of black eyeliner.and they look so ridiculous, and serious.nothing to do with real goths, though.

I just hate H&M,it's really big around here.it can take weeks before you find a person who really dresses nicely.take me away from here, I want to learn somehting about style!

sounds very much like germany.
i can't understand how any decent person can shop at h&m, it's probably different in the countries that they have added to their market only recently, but here...:ninja:

just out of interest, how much do french women weight in average? how tall are they, and what dresssize do they wear?

hello i'm not french(i'm spanish) but i live right near the south french border and it is kind of true that french call pull a great look almost always. They have like a million fashinable ways to wear a scarve8although it is typically a hermes scarve). As many have comented already their confidence is what makes most their looks impressive. They can mix trends, styles... and look amazing and all because of their attitude. Also i think that the fact that fashion kind of stared there makes it their histoory to be well dressed no matter what!

I think French women are generally thin...I once read an article saying that they were more diet thin than naturally thin.
Im not too sure about the height but i know they wear alot of high heels!!!

does anyone know any other online french shops apart from La redout?

i love the passion the french designer put into there collections... the clothes are more about elegance, refinement and romance

:P Everyone keeps caring on about how french women dont get fat... it is a complete generalisation... in every country there are women who eat small amounts for pleasure... and i think its wrong to generalise about weight in any country...

we need more french online shops :buzz:

I was looking through the French Women Don't Get Fat book a couple weeks ago and I actually kind of liked it because it wasn't a deprivation diet, it was telling people to eat what they like, but in small amounts. I think that in America one of the reasons a lot of people have weight problems is because they can't have just one serving of their favorite foods, they just keep eating it until they can't take anymore and thats how the weight piles on. Plus all the porcessed foods they sell here have too much sugar and artificial flavoring that doesn't make you feel full and makes your brain crave more of it. The book had some nice recipes too.

hello everyone ! this is actually my first post ever ! I am sorry for my poor english, but this is really not my best subject at school ...
I think I may be able to help, seeing that i am french and that style is a VERY serious matter in my family ... if there is a french style, that is ...
Sometimes, when wandering in streets, I highly doubt it ...

So , just for you to now, here is the diffrent groups of people (based on my parents and nearly all my friends and family) :

- women : my mother and my friends, all in their fifties, have similar vews about fashion and style : it is Very important, but it is also very vulgar to admit its importance . Being fashion frenzy is good for the "populace", not when you are from the "bonne societé". Clothes are important, and be divided in three categories : the vintage clothes, mainly from japanese designers (Yamamoto or comme des garçons), and of course, Chanel and Hermes, because of their good quality .... then, there's the trendy clothes, from balenciaga, marni, prada, rick owens, or lanvin ,beautifuls suits or dresses ... Dior or Versace, non merci ! and of course, there's the trash from h&m, zara

- men : suits from prada or dior, tailored shirts from charvet, shoes from gucci ... and a lot of different scarves !

- teenagers: my personal example : old comme des garçon and girbaud stuff from my father, new dior homme raf simons & miu miu items each seasons, stuff from H&M ....

the main thing is to know your best features and to use them . I've always seen my mother buy the same things over the years, only to have a personal style ... but this is also a matter of perfume, of taste in music or books (to be an air head is not a good thing, it will "destroy" you, no matter how beatiful you may be), a way of acting and living ... It is very cliché, but everything is about nonchalance, you have to look effortlessly good ... and even a little bit negligé ( a gorgeous saint laurent suit with dirty hair is a very common thing in paris, especially near saint germain).

Well, if you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them, even if I may not be the best specialiste about those kind of things

Thanks for the insight on French style, Huysmans...that negligé aspect is what I love most about style, I'm fascinated with the whole concept of wearing clothes as second skin...I love watching people who wear the clothes with that air of nonchalance you mentioned, it's almost as if one has put on the clothes then completely forgotten about them, that to me is sexy and I think in general the Europeans are very good at this.
