Take away the harlequinn make up and the scary hairpieces, some of the pieces here are actually quite beautiful!

LONDON, February 15, 2006 – Just when it seemed like the good old days of rebellious British eccentricity were over, along comes a pale youth, late of Central Saint Martins, who stages a fashion carnival for his first solo show. His name is Gareth Pugh, a lad from dour, post-industrial Sunderland, and he sent out a parade of perverse-looking harlequins with pom-pom hairdos, painted faces, and pointy hats. They wore vinyl bodysuits, towering platform Doc Martens, gargantuan ruffs, and voluminous checkered boleros and coats in black and gold. If the effect was a bit silly, there was also something defiantly ridiculous in devoting so much time and money to something so playful. To set the tone, he bounced a few giant black-and-white helium balloons into the audience before the show began. (Pugh has a thing about balloons.)

Though Pugh is the new sensation among the febrile design-student London clique, he's merely the latest addition to a long tradition of fashion-as-performance-art that stretches back through Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Vivienne Westwood to the eighties club culture of Leigh Bowery. That, of course, is ancient history to Pugh's generation, who grew up starved of fashion fun in the dour days of grunge and minimalism. It's no wonder that kids like him want to break out a bit now. As for grown-ups who might worry how he'll survive, well, there were precisely two coats—one with mink sleeves and a ruffled front, and another with hyperinflated lapels (that balloon influence again)—that might just keep the wolf from his door.

Remarkable structures.
It's fantastic to see something fashion on the horizon however silly. Give me this over Scott and Willhelm anyday. Just don't do menswear, please.
I can see that mink coat on Ms. Harlach or Ms. Blow immediately.

some of the pieces might actually be beautiful minus the hair and mime make-up, as said in post #1...

but what did you look at first?

i understand the appeal of being different and unique, it's crucial for success in the industry...but this is more than just that, it's a joke.

with that being said, i'm interested in seeing more from him. his potential is immense, the models' head pieces are just more so.

I don't understand the hype around him. Showstudio and I-D are apeshit over this guy but I am not impressed. It just looks like bad Mcqueen imaitations. If it's the theatricality and such i've seen it done better with Hideki Seo who just graduated from Antwerp this past spring.

Yeah I'm seeing his name a lot now , he was on some fashion tv show about two years ago , it's strange when you open a magazine and he is just there randomly , it was a free street publication :S not a magazine like i-D , TopShop have jumped on the bandwagon too.

When he first showed his harlequinns, I thought, hmm...interesting pieces in there...then he showed them again and again, and again, and now, it gets on my nerves like a bad broken record and recurring nightmare.

i totally agree with you mutterlien! I want to see where all this hype is going to end up...but i can see more craziness ahead. and hideki seos final year collection had my eyes glued to the screen for a minute.. i love what comes out of antwerp!

I don't get this... it is all so unapproachable. It is just creativity worn by models and not really clothes on models. You can be creative and approachable at the same time, but that is not the case here.

the first word that sprung into my head: Tacky.
But soon afterwards... eh... this is not that bad... :ermm:

I agree with all the talk of hideki, such fun stuff! Thats what I think this lacks slightly, Pugh's always out and about around brick lane/shoreditch way and he does just look like another pretencious fashion student type that takes themselves way too seriously. That said, I've never had the pleasure in meeting him and could be way off.

Whatever. It's still great to see a bit of madness sitting next to names such as amanda wakely and you know, I actually see an improvement. Even if it is just one more wearable garment than last time (I'm thinking of the style.com mentioned coats) or one or two more garment that would suit editorials (the tinsel coat and gold and black leotard), who knows? Maybe in 3 or 4 years he'll be producing beautiful, desirable clothes as well as all the theatrics.

he's talented no doubts. i do think the theatrics get a bit outlandish but it's actually kind of refreshing to see. did you know that he used to assist rick owens at revillion?

Does he make any pieces that someone could wear on a day other than Halloween? Does anyone buy his clothes? This is better than the last violent-looking menswear collection I saw from him.

I agree, but this show seems to be more like an interesting show than something one could actually wear. I'd love to have seen this live.

Thanks for posting!

I have, I met him on the 55 bus from Hackney to Oxford Street and he seemed so shy, I know his flat mate whose the editor of Super Super magazine but I only talked to him for a few minutes.

^ you know namalee?
yeah he is the nicest guy you could ever meet he's shy but i think sometimes it comes off as arrogance.
i think his clothes are great some of this is a bit  you mostly see the club kids wearing his stuff, i dont think many people buy it because its not really available, i'd love to buy it but i dont know anywhere that stocks it.
the window in kokon to zai in london has gareth pugh in it i think it looksjust as great up close as it does on the runway. the fabrics he uses are like luxury fabrics so with that and the large scale its gonna be effin expensive:doh:
