By TFL | Published November 10, 2014
Model Ginta Lapina has scored an early victory in the lawsuit Women Model Management filed against her. You may recall that the Latvia-born beauty, who was represented by New York-based Women until this past September, was slapped with a breach of contract suit by the agency after she jumped ship to rival DNA model management. Women’s lawsuit alleges that 25-year old Lapina is under contract with them until 2016, and asks the court to order her to fulfill her contract with Women, as it “invested substantial time, money and resources in Lapina’s nascent career” and she is “a unique and irreplaceable talent.” Specifically, Women asked the court to issue a preliminary injunction, blocking Lapina from working with DNA until the lawsuit was completed.

Well, as of late last month, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Manuel Mendez refused to order a preliminary injunction, holding that Lapina’s departure from the agency will not burden the company too significantly, as she is just one of many highly paid models on the Women Model Management roster. Moreover, Mendez held that Women’s claims that Lapina’s defection threatened the existence of its business were merely “conclusory and speculative.”
Lapina, who has fronted campaigns for Celine, YSL, Moschino, Marc by Marc Jacobs, and Miu Miu, among others, filed a suit of her own on the heels of being sued by Women. In her suit, Lapina claims that the modeling agency withheld thousands of dollars from her in connection with a photo shoot with Karl Lagerfeld. She further alleges that Women mislead her as the usage of the photos at issue, and paid her a measly $19,700 for a shoot with Karl Lagerfeld that was subsequently used in an international hair-product ad campaign for Berlin-based company, Schwarzkopf. Lapina claims she was due a six or seven-figure paycheck for the gig, but is suing for over $1 million, as she claims the job diluted her image. More to come …
Meet the Models: Behind-the-Scenes with our Holiday Campaign Stars
On a steamy day in August, we traded in our sandals and loose maxi dresses for the cashmere scarves and Nordic sweaters of our holiday campaign shoot at New York’s Milk Studios. Surrounded by faux snow, wind machines and perfectly wrapped orange gift boxes, we stopped dreaming of hot chocolate and Alpine chalets long enough to get to know the faces of the campaign. As is often the case, we found more than meets the eye to this photogenic crew. Among them were a carpenter, an ex-soldier, and a skateboarder—all originally from disparate corners of the globe.
Ginta Lapina, 25
Joe Fresh: Hi Ginta. Where are you from and how were you discovered?
Ginta Lapina: I am originally from Latvia and was scouted when I was 15 in a train station, but didn’t start modeling full time until I was 18 when I moved to New York. I’ve lived here ever since.
JF:You must travel a lot for work?
GL: Yes, usually between Los Angeles, Paris and London. And then if I get lucky, every once in a while, I get to go to more exotic places. My favorite places I’ve been are Marrakech and Bali. They are so opposite from each other, and from New York it’s like three separate worlds.
JF:What do you like to do during your time off?
GL: I love being in nature, so when I have some time I like to rent a Citi Bike and bike as far as I can go up the West Side Highway and through Central Park.
JF:How has modeling changed your personal style?
GL: Modeling has definitely changed how I dress. I used to dress really funky but now I wear a lot more basic stuff and a lot more black. I think every girl should have a good pair of black jeans and a black shirt. It’s all about practical, easy dressing.
JF:What are your plans for the holidays?
GL: I usually go home to Latvia for Christmas. My family gathers at my grandmother’s house on Christmas Eve. We read poems, sing songs, and my aunt dresses up as Santa Claus and gives us presents.
