My mother is white and my father, dark. Then a little girl was born, me, that, to be honest, I think I took after more my father. Most part of the time, black models don’t have the same opportunities as white ones”, says Gracie Carvalho, 18, that is in Caribbean shooting for Victoria’s Secret. For her, the desire of achieving has to be “above those differences”. “I started in a competition in São José dos Campos, but I didn’t win. A scouter asked me if I wanted to try to be a model in São Paulo. I did”.
The model believes she’s been lucky in her career. “I got lots of shows in São Paulo Fashion Week, in Rio and later, in Paris, Milan and New York. I’ve been living for three months in USA, but I’ve already done important campaigns”, says Gracie that adds: “I think I’ve arrived in a good moment: I heard that, with Barack Obama as a president, Afro-American people are in fashion here. I support him”.
