Granny Style

Kween, please credit the picture.

As for the "trend", I've always loved it. Classic elegance is a way of dressing (and way of life, for thet matter). I've always worn it and will always wear it, even when it will no longer be on the catwalks.

^yeah, i can see jackets as the easiest to 'revive'
Yep, I agree...

I love wearing ''granny'' cardigans over loose t-shirts and what not..

i somehow can't connect "granny style" and "classic style" - i see them as two different things, but maybe i don't understand what is meant by granny

Valerique, the way I see it this thread is not referring to grannies with socks in their Birkenstocks, but to vintage or vintage-looking clothes and accesories which compose that '40's or '50's look which I consider classic elegance. :flower:

I love the 'Granny' style, but only on certain people. Some people just don't know how to pull the outfit together or "they don't wear the outfit, the outfit wears them."

^^This would make sense.
But I can't shake the vision of "grannies with socks in their Birkenstocks" off my thoughts

Anyway, so far we've seen fashions from all 'eras' being reinvented successfully (and beautifully). As long as it's not the 80s :ninja: I'm open for any experiments

  I noticed example after example of this while reviewing the fall 2006 collections of several Argentina-based designers.

On the right, an ensemble in which the old eccentric may uphold bygone standards of luxury :p

Crochet... knitting. For those who can't, finding a grandmother you know and asking her the favor might be worth a try?

Raise the neckline a fraction each year and you'll have a look for life ^_^

The coat here brings to mind those chic old ladies who wear clear plastic, head-to-toe, when it rains in order to preserve their immaculate grooming

The only item I like from granny-style, is grandma cardigans! I have lots of them, but I'm more thinking 'grunge' than 'grandma' really...

i think this trend is part of the beginning of a move away from the high-speed consumption of trends; maybe it's just me but it seems like people are slowly coming around to the idea of having a smaller, more expensive and classic wardrobe.

hmm very good point made there milkeyed :flower:

I'm a huge fan of this look. It's neat, stylish, not overtly trendy and just looks really sharp and classic. Thanks for the picutres and ideas!

Aaw, glad you guys like it. Yeah, everytime i walk by an old person, i always think of why they are wearing what they are wearing, wheather its pearls or hand-me-downs. It's so interesting to get like an 80 year old's story, where they came from, what they did. They are generally inspiring, fashion wise too.

i have always been a huge fan of granny style as much as i adore vintage clothes! i have such a massive collection, it's ridiculous, but i have to admit i added two MJ bags from last fall to it, as i fell in love with them as soon as i saw them. so i mix vintage dresses, sweaters, and button up shirts with dark drainpipe bluejeans, and one of my collections of cowboy boots...not the in-your-face western ones, but like those worn by 1940's pin-up girls....top that off with either my taupe stam or black quilted MJ and something to knit and im SO set!

im glad there's the granny look for those of us who dont like the bust tight tops and lower-than-they-should-legally-be-allowed jeans and trashy trends that i see so often...

I guess I've always had grandma-ish taste. I never really noticed it until this year when I fell in love with Prada's perfume and the Marc Jacobs Stam. I never noticed these were granny items until everyone else kept saying so. Then I looked around at my room and realized how much my grandma probably influenced me. I don't think I come off granma-ish though. I just prefer classic things that old women like.

I agree that they're classy because they have years of experience. I think everyone should have well-fitting clothes and accessories that will last for years. Then you will always look modern and not frumpy.

Love it, especially when mixed with 'younger' items or design elements. There's nothing wrong with the classics. Even though it's technically older, nowadays it's actually quite refreshing when everything else is all bling and T&A. Viva la grannys!

My friends told me i have 'granny style' because of my obsession with cardigans and clip-frame bags like that gorgeous marc jacobs stam bag on the front page. But i don't see it as 'granny', more as vintage inspired.
Btw...i love grannies, they're so cool. My gran in amazing :)

Right on. When I see a granny on the street with a stylin' cardi or a crazy printed collared printed shirt, I sometimes ask where they got that piece from.:p

Grannies are cool. Period. Whenever I see a granny walking by and I thinkg if their outfit was worn by someone a lot younger - everyone would be saying how effing cool that person looks.

^_^ BUMP!

Think it's coming back. I have been attracted to floral patterns I've been seeing on the moms coming in to my work. I keep thinking, "I need to hit up the Goodwill and find something like that."

Camilla Belle: someone called her shirt Granny-esque.

If granny be the antidote to trashy, count me in!

I also wonder what I might make of all this if I was an actual grandmother myself;)

i'm surprised there's only 3 pages :p I agree with you, esp seeing Prada this winter  I think it's more fun and easier to play with as a girl, that the style can change many ways -but for guys, mostly for that I think Paul Smith or the sartorialist

^That pic is great - I'm feeling it :flower:

Papa, thanks for the bump. I actually went thru my moms closet about a week ago and found a little collection of Grannie-ish floral shirts. Rather resembling the one Camilla Bell is wearing ^_^
- Thanks mum. :D

To tone down the granny-ish look I plan on wearing them with a black leather pencil skirt.
But I might wear it with some kind of full skirt if I'm feeling really granny-esque ^_^
