A cape from the coming Greta Garbo collecion.
I Vant to Be a Designer
In other celebrity designer news, Greta Garbo has decided to start a fashion collection under her own name. In the coming year, the reclusive, mysterious Swede, star of "Anna Christie" and "Mata Hari," will introduce collections of Greta Garbo coats, fine jewelry and Montblanc pens. That she died in 1990 is not slowing Garbo down. She is also looking for a hat license.
The resurrection of Garbo's career, now as a designer, comes about because of a range of new licenses managed by her great-nephews Derek Reisfeld and Scott Reisfeld, who announced the deals around what would have been the actress's 100th birthday last Sunday. (A United States postage stamp bearing her image will be released tomorrow.)
On Monday, Montblanc had a party to introduce a black fountain pen with an 18-karat-gold nib and an ivory cap, Garbo's signature engraved at the edge. Verdura, the jewelry company, is selling a $1,950 sterling silver link bracelet designed after the yellow gold one the actress wore. And Amerimade Coat, an Italian vendor, is opening a showroom at 530 Seventh Avenue next week for the Greta Garbo collection of capes and lightly embroidered slim coat styles that are based on 1930's and 40's silhouettes, priced from $600 to $4,500. Garbo helped popularize trench coats and berets in the 30's.
"Greta Garbo was often called the modern woman, and she was known for her bold fashion statements," said Gaspar Ferrara, the Amerimade chief executive. "The name, for me, at least opens the door to show the product."
As usual, Garbo could not be reached for comment.
