Exclusive! Grey's Fires Isaiah Washington

Yeah, you read that headline correctly.

Multiple sources are telling me that Isaiah Washington will not be returning to Grey's Anatomy next season. An ABC Studios spokesperson confirms that the actor's contract option has not been picked up, but declined further comment.

According to one insider, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, the decision was due in part to the whole T.R. Knight homophobic slur scandal.

Developing...

Well, after catching up with the last episode....I can't say I'm surprised but....Preston Burke was a good character in it's prime.

I wonder who (if someone will) replace him. Eeks, Grey's seems to be on shaky grounds for the upcoming season. Also with Addison (Kate Walsh) leaving for her own show, which did not look exciting in the previous episode...And aren't there rumors saying that Katherine Hiegel isn't pleased with her contract?

^^ She's not. Frankly I see most of the cast ie Ellen, Sandra, Katherine, T.R & Justin as being on the same level when it comes to status on the show. I know it is named after Ellen's character but I've never seen her as the star of the show. I think they should all be paid equally.

Katherine talks about the salary dispute here.

Finally they got rid of Isiah - after choking Patrick and verbally abusing T.R on a few occasions it was about damn time.

Yeah, I have a full article as well...

The speculation is over: After a controversial season, Isaiah Washington will not be returning to Grey's Anatomy, his rep and ABC Television Studio have confirmed.

Howard Bragman, Washington's publicist, says Washington's option was not renewed, and released this statement from the actor: "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more."

Bragman did not elaborate on the statement, a reference to the 1976 film Network.

The cast was notified Thursday night of the final decision, which, says a source close to the situation, was a long time coming. In the end, the source says, Washington's behavior made him a liability.

Rumors ran rampant following the season finale – during which Washington's character, Dr. Preston Burke, broke up with his fiancée, Christina Yang (Sandra Oh), and moved out of their apartment – that Washington would not be returning.

The actor first came under fire last fall after getting into an altercation with Patrick Dempsey, during which he allegedly referred to castmate T.R. Knight with a homophobic slur.

Washington later apologized, checked into rehab, met with gay leaders and recently released a PSA decrying the use of hate speech.

I never really liked Burke though to be honest, or Cristina...

They're using some of Season 2 promos...

I'm really sad about this. I really hate Isaiah for his comments and behavior, but I really loved Christina and Burke together. They were a cute couple and I loved that nobody cared that it was an interracial relationship.

But it probably doesn't matter anyway. I don't think I'm going to be watching next season. This entire season was a nightmare.

Isaiah Washington is not returning. How about "Burke"? I am interested to see George's future in the hospital. And if they are going to focus on those new interns and Meredith's 1/2 sister, I'll refuse to watch the show!

^^ Almost certainly. At the beginning of Season 3, he's in contract as a regular, like Meredith, George...
We're not so sure about Callie however.

^ Oh thanks for that excellent news,I give you karma cause it's such a good news :woot:

^ I hope that they will developped a little bit more his character though.

Isaiah Washington Breaks His Silence

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How are you feeling about what happened last week? Did you think it was fair?
ISAIAH WASHINGTON: I don't know if it's a question of ''fair.'' I'm saddened by the outcome. I did everything that the producers and the network asked me to do. I came back under great duress and stress, and thought I was doing the job I was hired to do. I thought that was going to speak for my future at Grey's, but apparently that wasn't the same vision that the network and studio had for me.

Why do you think the decision was made by ABC? Was Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes happy about it?
I knew she was aware of the decision. But you have to understand that she's at the helm of one of the top-rated scripted shows on television.

Were you in touch with Shonda after you were fired?
She called me on Thursday of last week [June 7] and told me that I would not be returning to the show. Just like she personally called me and invited me to the show. It was full circle.

When was the last time you talked to Shonda?
Yesterday.

There are rumors you may file a lawsuit against ABC.
I don't know anything about that.

Have you heard from many of your castmates?
No. Everyone is still on vacation. I don't expect to hear from my castmates. I did talk to Chandra Wilson and I got a text message from Kate Walsh. Everyone's doing their own thing. People are still trying to enjoy their summer before they get back to the grind. I think a lot of people are out of the country. I'm still getting calls from people discovering that this change has occurred. [EW also spotted Washington receiving a hug and hi-five from former cast member Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Denny) at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. the day he was let go.]

Would you consider you and T.R. Knight to be on good terms?
I don't know. You have to ask T.R. that.

Anything you'll miss about Grey's?
I'll miss working with the team. I think the past season we got our rite of passage and we pretty much all learned what we can and we can't do...like any other new show or fledgling child trying to find its legs. Season 4 is going to be stronger, better and wiser and smarter, and I had hoped to be a contributor to that. That's not the reality.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There are rumors that you were originally supposed to be the lead in a Grey's spin-off. Did Shonda ever approach you?
ISAIAH WASHINGTON: Me for a spin-off? No. No. Never. I love Shonda Rhimes and her writing ability and I felt like she made me a better actor because of her talent. I was invited back by Shonda to be part of the team and I always had a team player mentality about that. I took it as a humbling opportunity to be invited and be part of the team. I'm going to miss her writing. She's an extraordinary talent. She's very collaborative and allowed me to create the Dr. Burke that the world has grown to love.

Would you be open to cameo on Grey's?
Dr. Burke is probably the greatest challenge I've ever had. I've studied the medical world extensively. I enjoy surgeons and I'm glad they do what they do and I gave it everything I had. If Shonda calls me and says, ''Look we want you to do something for Grey's Anatomy'' I probably would not hesitate. But I don't really see that happening.

How do you think this is going to affect your career?
I'm working right now [on the indie film, The Least of These]. I can only take one day at a time. I can only apologize so many times. I can only accept so much responsibility. All the players involved have taken care of what we needed to take care of in-house — and the media took it in a different direction. I hope that everyone is happy for the outcome for Isaiah, but Isaiah will go on and do what I love to do. And I have to go about the business of letting people know what's written about me is not the truth. I'm merely an actor, a husband, and a father who's trying to do a great job and be very grateful and understanding that I'm in a very privileged position. This isn't a time for me to be looking back; it's only a time for me to be looking forward. I just hope people can understand in the industry and otherwise that it's a horrible misunderstanding what transpired with our show and it was blown out of proportion. If the naysayers out there feel that some justice has been served and that they're happy with the outcome, so be it. It's incumbent on me to take what I do, do it well, grow from the experience, and move on.

Do you have any concerns about being labeled as difficult as an actor?
Hopefully I'll have an opportunity to address a lot of that down the road. It'd be very cleansing for my soul to let the fans and the general public see a side of me that I feel was horribly represented in the press.

What type of offers have you received?
I've gotten a ton of offers in both film and TV, and now my agent Ben Press and I are just sorting through all the options. There is one network in particular that's very interested. But I don't want to say anything specific until it's a done deal.

Why did you decide to make the movie The Least of These?
Actually, I decided to do the part based on the recommendation of Sandra Oh. I was telling her about it last fall and she felt it was a strong role that would be good for me. Since Sandra is a Golden Globe winner among other things I always take her advice. She's a smart lady.

Would you work with ABC again?
[Laughs] I don't know. That's up to ABC.

Ask Ausiello

Question: What's been the fallout from Isaiah Washington Grey's firing?— Cindy
Ausiello: Well, the folks over at Grey's are apparently steamed about comment Isaiah's rep, Howard Bragman, made to me on Friday, specifically the part about how his client jumped through hoops only to be fired anyway. "Apparently, Isaiah missed the point that he should have been apologizing and working on his anger issues because it's the right thing to do," whispers a Grey's insider. "It wasn't just supposed to be an empty exercise he went through for the sake of appearances."

Question: Why did ABC wait so long to fire Isaiah Washington?— Nancy Farkas
Ausiello: The alternative would've been to fire him in the middle of the season, and that would've been a disaster both legally and creatively. The easiest thing to do was release him at the end of his contract cycle, and that's what happened. What's not clear is when exactly the decision to dump him was made. Some say it was as far back as February; others insist a final verdict didn't come down until last week. Only a handful of people know for sure, and, unfortunately, one of them is nicknamed the Information Nazi.

Question: You wrote in the Ausiello Report about Brooke Smith doing a four-episode arc on Weeds. Is there any chance of her returning to Grey's Anatomy next season? After all, Seattle Grace has a spot open for a cardiothoracic surgeon.— Laura
Ausiello: I hear they're looking for a guy to fill that particular void.

I've gotten a ton of offers in both film and TV, and now my agent Ben Press and I are just sorting through all the options. There is one network in particular that's very interested. But I don't want to say anything specific until it's a done deal.

HAHA don't flatter yourself Isaiah. I think everyone knew it was bound to happen, I am not at all surprised he was fired and i'm not sorry either. Season three brought the show downhill. The plots and storylines are completely ridiculous as are the medical aspects of the show. And how many freaking main characters can the show need? There are like 9 or 10! Addison is leaving to star on her own spin-off which will probably suck because let's face it, the 2 hour Grey's season finale/Private Practice promo was dumb. Grey's officially has jumped the shark.

AGH! I dislike Isiah Washington for his behavior but his character is necessary in this show! I hate it when all these new characters start popping up and it becomes something completely different. I refuse to watch Private Practice with Kate Walsh. PP is just like CSI: Miami, existing off associating because there is no substance. I wish George was canned instead, he is so annoying. This subplot of Georage and Izzy is pissing me off. It is not freaking cohesive!

I refuse to watch Private Practice with Kate Walsh. PP is just like CSI: Miami,
I'm not watching PP. The name is terrible enough as it is... Kate Walsh is my favorite actress on the show though. Then again, I might not be watching GA next season after the last few episodes of Season 3 turning out to be a dissapointment, but I actually disagree with you on the Miami analogy. The show has developed into a great one, with deep characters and an action-packed styled show. :flower: It varies from the original... However NY is still trying to find its style.
