Gwen Stefani has laughed off Madonna's claims she copied her style from the Material Girl - insisting everyone from her generation was influenced by the pop superstar.

Madonna took a cheeky swipe at the former No Doubt singer last weekend, saying: "She ripped me off. We work with a lot of the same people. She married a Brit, she's got long hair and she likes fashion."

But Stefani insists Madonna iconic status means she influenced a whole generation of girls.

She says: "Some people say that I copy her. But show me one girl my age who was not influenced by her."

Hope Mad's was just jesting, but if not, what's her problem? She wants to be an influence but then makes a dig at people who are influenced by her...

Anyway Madonna's copied loads of people: Marilyn Monroe, Cyndi Lauper...

Gwen rocks!

Interesting. I can see some similarities now that it's mentioned, but I've honestly never thought of Gwen as a Madonna rip-off. I think that's a bit egotistical on Madge's part. Surprise, surprise

Good for Gwen too for putting a good perspective on it!! Love her

Who cares who rips who off? You're a celebrity and if you don't want pple copying you, don't become one. Simple as that. And stating it in public just seems petty.
But the part of her marrying a Brit does sound like Madonna was just joking, so...

As far as I know, this is sort of taken out of context, Madonna went on to say how she loves Gwen and copies her too.

yeah she s an icon but it doesn t mean that Gwen coppied her just cuz she married a brit and what bout that long hair comment??? i like Madg and all but come on, get over urself not everybody s copying u hon.

I don't think they have anything in common. well madge used to have blond hair

It's not really taken out of context.. of course Madonna attempted to redeem herself by saying she loves Gwen blah blah... but not before she let it be known that she feels Gwen copies her.

Madonna's comments always have real intent behind them IMO...no matter how she tries to cover it.

and I remember what her spokeswoman said in response to Elton John's dig against her... 'madonna doesn't go around trashing other artists'..

yeah right...

Oh please! And Madge hasn't been copying anybody?? Madonna is a mere follower not an iconoclast like everyone thinks she is...just like she jumped on the bandwagon of electronica. Copying Björk and Massive Attack. And isn't she copying Kylie with this new album?? You can say she brought electronica into the mainstream but really,it was Garbage who did that.

As for that Material Girl look....wasn't Madge channeling a 40's look anyhow? That's hardly renders it rip-off worthy. Alot of people are keen on the 40's,not just her.

Poor dried-up old has-been. Picking at straws because Gwen is getting all the glory right now.

well, they are both attention whores. but as far as i know liking fashion, having long hair, and marrying brits is a commonality between millions of girls!

It seems to becoming very trendy for celebs to slag each other off via the press...it's getting annoying.

I've been hearing the "Gwen's copying/stealing from Madonna!" since Love Angel Music Baby was announced, and that's what I expected to find. What I heard instead was, in my opinion, a complete and total homage (though to paraphrase some guy on the Simpson's commentary, "homage" is just French for "steal" to Cyndi Lauper. A well done, enjoyable homage. I seem to be one of the few people who liked No Doubt, and also likes Gwen's current stuff (minus the rediculous, wrong in so many ways, Hollaback Girl video, it's one thing listening to it, quite another watching a woman in her mid 30's pretend to be a cheerleader). If anyone has a case for copying, it's Cyndi, not Madge. But really, LAMB is such an enjoyable, spot-on homage it made me want to dig out all my old Cyndi Lauper albums again and buy the ones I don't own. And that's a good thing, in my opinion.

Very much agreed!! :flower: I dont get Madonna's appeal at all, I dont think shes that original herself to be honest & a lot of stars are influenced by each other.

If Madonna thought this out at all, she would've realized that Gwen was romantically linked to a Brit waaaaay before Guy came into the picture....and seriously, long hair screams copycat, doesn't it?

God, Madonna, who is very original in her own way (I can't knock that) has borrowed from plaenty of sources, so she could easily be called a copycat too (I mean, she totally ripped off Marilyn Monroe back in the day, and not very well)

o please, madonna knows how to work the press like nobody's business -_- ... people sometimes forget but she does have an iq of 140, so she's definitely smarter than your average pop stars.

madonna knows her 'diva' days are fading away so she latches on to these hotter n younger stars like there's no tomorrow (remember britney and xtina???) i guess we should all be thankful that she didnt try to stick her tongue down on gwen's throat

Hmmm...where to start? First, Madonna not only immtated individuals, but she mimmics and exploits subcultures, ideas, and emotions, and that is how she remains cutting edge. Her Marylin phase was not the only golden age of Hollywood look. She has copied Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Martha Grahm, and many more. The video for "Hollywood" got her sued. Check out the work of Guy Bourdin and you'll see what I'm talking about. People seem to be confused as to what it is that makes Madonna successful; Madonna is a shining example of a Symbolic Analyst at it's best. Do some more reading you guys. It's not magic.

This just in: Madonna said these comments in her terrible faux-British accent.

Both Madonna and Gwen are inspired - in a big big way - by Marilyn Monroe. Madonna was making a little joke - and she's getting a bit of publicity while doing so B)

I really don't think Madonna's diva days are over.. she's still selling records like hotcakes and she has an incredibly loyal fanbase. Her tours always sell out, despite the ridiculous prices.. she's not going anywhere. She was clever enough to use Britney and Xtina to her advantage.. 2 pop princesses whom she both kissed... to show she was still at the top of her game and at the end of the day, she controlled that little stint.

I completely admire and respect Madonna for what she's done, she's worked her **** off and totally deserves everything she's got at the minute. She's dead clever, and very manipulative. She's a chamelon and an incredible actress in the sense that she can be whoever she wants to be to anyone when need be. Does anyone ever remember that David Letterman show when she refused to get off stage? She was the first guest and she was trying to be hardcore and literally refused to get off the seat? Letterman was sh*tting it.. but whenever she's interviewed by Oprah, she's always been as sweet as pie.
