Gwen Stefani Sneaker Launch at Barney's

yea barney's is a trendy conservative store. theyll carry trendy brands and cutting edge designers, but theyll buy the most conservative pieces from each. I mean look at the helmut lang and ann demeulemeester. and compare the marni at barneys to the marni at the marni boutique. so different. but i was told the the senior buyer at barneys is a extremely conservative women. and she is basically responsible for the overall image of barneys, and she audits all the buys the department buyers do. like it doesnt even matter if its a obvious piece thats going to sell, if it doesnt go along with the lines of its image, shell cancel the order.

edit: also id liek to mention the zac posen at barney's. if anyone has seen it, WTF is that?!?!?

Did she sign autographs for fans? (or is that to uncool for Barney's customers?) I would've wanted one, but I had class :(

naw like i said earlier, she spoke for 10 seconds and split. paparazzi was there taking pics like crazy and yelling, which wasnt really neccessary.

here's a pic from the appearance:

i have the gold shoes that's she's holding (from the womens line that's been out since july, but they're exactly the same). hah very tacky/gaudy, i admit it....but so comfortable, and i love them.

but yeah, it does seem weird for them to be at barneys...
nordstrom carries the shoes...(not sure about the mens, though.) and i had heard about macys carrying them, but haven't gotten any confirmation...

thanks for the info, i didn't know that before.....:flower:

Your right. I met a buyer from there, and I knew it was over when she walked in- I thought it was my school teacher from kindergarten, with her white turtleneck!

most of the department buyers at barneys are asian, which is pretty cool, but too bad that theyre not the boss, i think if they had it their own way barneys would actually look cutting edge.

Hmm... it reminds me a lot of what BAPE footwear should look like (based on their clothing).

I sort of like the "Love Hiphop" shoe, but that's it. Also surprising that the line is called LAMB, yet there are no Angel shoes for men.

Ugh, I went to her site.

Her women's shoes are terrible! They're so gaudy and ugly.

Yes, this lady was not asian....and that is the most info I am giving, though if you know the buyers, you know who I am talking about.....;) :innocent: :ninja:

only buyer i met so far who wasnt asian was one of the balenciaga buyers. its 1 asian girl and 1 white girl whos in charge of balenciaga

EdK,her name is Julie Gilhart. And she's really anything but conservative. It's just the economy that is. Everything is safe and customers are buying safely. Just the way it is at the moment in fashion...not just at Barney's. Actually,Julie is the lady responsible for getting the Belgians stateside, when nobody really knew much about them nevermind pointing to Belgium on a map. So she's actually quite interested in creative and quirky things. She's been a proud supporter of indie designer's for aeons from Tess Giberson & Miguel Adrover(both of whom she helped jump-start their career's)to Boudicca. And has been on the panel of judges for Ecco Domani. She's really, truly the only American buyer(especially,at such an establishment) genuinely interested in design and idea's. I mean, what other department store of that calibre would have the balls to sell Susan Cianciolo?!

You´re right, I even saw her on some press kit from Nicolas Andreas, back when he did his very first presentation, they already bought it, as well as a dear friend of ours from Berlin, Markus Stich who is doing menswear... I am always amazed to hear what kind of labels they stock, especially when they are that small...

OK ths has gotten a little off topic, back to the shoes...:innocent: I actually liked the models I saw much better than any Nike, Puma, whatsoever... although I must admit that I don´t ever wear gimmick-y shoes...

You should go to Chicago and take a look at the Barneys over there! I can't say they only sell trash over there, but to be honest, 80 or maybe 90 percent of their mens wear are simply expensive trash! After all it's not just the store buyers or its fashion director who can decide what to sell, ultimately it's the customers. If you have customers who only need "nice-looking" and "no-frill' clothes, what could you expect stores even like Barneys to carry? Most average American customers are confident people, they trust in their own taste with 100% confidence, if you tell them they need some education on what's good and what's bad, they might very well bite your head off !

The last time I was in Barney's Chicago, an employee wearing an entirely Dsquared outfit (despite the Chicago location not carrying Dsquared!) was freaking out because Carson Daly was coming to the store the next day. It almost made their awful stock bearable!

Scott... besides her there is another who also makes the end decisions and her name is julie too I think. but besides that, I was told this by the buyers and the trunk show coordinator. now who would know better, you or them? ;) and what does being a supporter of new or indie designers have to do with what i was saying? did you happen to see the boudicca at barney's? haha

I'm from Chicago, and honestly the entire city is conservative not just the Barney's there. Thats why John varvatos is so hot there, I mean every single store carries it. Bloomingdales, Saks, Barney's, Marshall field's etc.. but were talking about New York here, when it comes to fashion you can't compare the two. Chicago is ruled by jcrew and banana, people are way too safe there
