Have you posted any larger pictures in the lookbook section? The ones in your signature are a bit hard to see...

Also, if I'm ever feeling ambitious I'd like to try making one of these newpaper bags. They don't look too difficult...

How do you go about making a handbag, (not just fabric sewn together)?

Well, you either buy a pattern or draft one, though the ones I mentioned in my earlier post were all kind of free-handed and improvised (except for the wedding bag).
Pretty much a lot of planning and measuring, and it helps to have a good spatial sense (to be able to visualize a bunch of flat pattern pieces and a 2D sketch coming together as a 3-d object)
Having a sewing machine that will handle heavy fabrics is always a major bonus.
Actually, there are a lot of books out there on making accessories. You might want to swing by your local library and have a look. A lot of the stuff in them is fairly
but you can get a good idea about how to draft general shapes, and then you can make them up in whatever fabric you like and trim them as you please.
Murakami (whenever I see that name, I think Haruki!) if you have some more specific technique questions let me know, and I'll share what I know, and I imagine luna could really enlighten the both of us!

[/quote]Purple, that bag is fairly easy to make, all you need is a dowel or some kind of stick as handles.. the rest are flat patterns. I could help you out a bit if you found trouble.

The chairman of the accessories department (@ FIT) is putting out a new book on making leather handbags, she already has one out, but it is dealing with strictly fabric. They photographed a lot of the things that my class has made, The gray and turquoise polka dot hobo is going to be in the book!
And yes.. having an industrial sewing machine is a definite plus. Worth the money!
The hardest part about doing it, is making the patterns to be quite honest. And if you lack skill in sewing, it can be rough (with leather).
but hell, if I can do it. any of you can.
I'm at my friend's place, and I found this great book called "Making Handbags". It's by Ellen Goldstein-Lynch/Sarah Mullins/Nicole Malone, published by Rockport. It has these patterns in it, detailed instructions and lots of great ideas!

I've made a lot of bags and I'm swimming in ideas now, just need the right material
here are a few of my creations:
I made 3 bags, light blue, blue and dark blue, all looked the same, just the lid that was a little differant, I have pictures of two of these bags:
I felted a blue bag with pearls that I gave away as a birthday preasent
Many more, just don't have pictures
I felted two red/pinkish bags with a red flower on the corner for my boyfriends little sisters (6 and 7 years old) and I felted a gray one with a leather lid for his mom... next time I want to sew the bag the felting can wait a while

I made a canvas messanger bag one time in Art. The assignment was to draw something on it, or do a pattern of some sort, but the pigments (we used acrylic paint base and added the color ourselves) weren't bright enough for me to be interested. So I printed some black-and-white pictures off the net of some of my favorite Japanese Visual Kei bands and using a mixture of paint base, water, purple pigment and elmers glue I created a lavender-tinted collage on it that wouldn't peel off. Then I sewed the pieces together, had some help attaching the strap and voila! I have the most bitchin' bag in the city!
