Thanks so much for the encouragement! I just got 3 books on sewing today, I'm just happy I haven't sewn my fingers together yet... ^_^
Are you working on anything right now?

(p.s. The leaf is an iron-on transfer, like people use for t-shirts. You can get
them in the Kids Crafts section at Michael's)

A good beginner's book is Making Handbags by Ellen Goldstein and others. Don't worry about your sewing skills, just dive in (and please post pics of your projects, I'd love to see 'em) :D

Spiralsnowman: Thanks for the tip, I'll go to the library someday and see if they have any books about it. I will post pictures of my projects - if I make any. I have a bad habit of not finishing my projects  .

right now im lining up stuff to do. i work at a fabric store and so my stash is exploding and i need to make stuff.....a lot of stuff! hahaha.

i have a white lace dress i am almost finished with and also a cream silk brocade cropped jacket i just need to hem. i also have an idea for a waist belt bag, kinda cowgirlish.....after i saw one that was similar at a thrift store. im going to do that one out of pebbled cognac-colored leather. i also have two other bags i have started and need to finish, a black patent leather lambskin one and a woven textured one with handrolled silk roses. i'll take pics of the bags as soon as i finish them, and will wear the jacket or dress while holding the bag so i can sneak those into this forum :D

Yesterday I got three books about making bags from my library. I'm looking forward to try and make some, but that will have to wait a bit though, since I have exames coming up next week.

I'm in the same situation as you, lol. I've had to pack away the fabric because of a big essay that's due ;)
I did make one small bag last week, but I've been hesitant to post it because I'm afraid it looks quite *rough*, like a high school home ec project. Here it is:

Anyone have any advice on how to improve? Would changing materials help?(I've been using plain cotton duck canvas) Thanks!

i love that bag! i really like the designs your putting on them! you should try some upholstery fabric....thats always fun to work with and about the same weight as duck cloth so you will be familiar with the materials :)

There is a thread dedicated to tFS members who make their own bags. i'll merge with that.

very cute bag!!!! reminds me of something i'd buy from japan or something...gosh...i have so many projects i need to finish!!!!!!!!!! i just bought an issue of this international japanese magazine and there's this really interesting article on an art of scarf folding where you can make all of these crazy bags out of a square of fabric. it's really inspiring...

I'm definitely going to get into making bags again soon...

Thanks jun! I've seen some Japanese pattern books on eBay and they look so cool, almost minimalist. Wish I could read Japanese. My aunt (a knitter) tells me you can make out the instructions from some of then from the pictures, though.

You guys are getting me excited, as whenever I see your completed projects I get really inspired. :)

awhhh thanks! you inspire me too, though! i love seing the stuff other people make and it makes me want to go start finishing all the stuff i start. it's nice to have people with the same interests on here, and to be able to learn tips and tricks just makes it that much better! karma for you spiral :flower:

Is me again~
I used the stock fabric of my last bags collection to make this one.....
So fun!!
The handle is trim by my mums pearl....hope she don't mind:lol:

this is off topic a little - but I bought a handmade bag in Italy that kinda looks like a knockoff Birkin. same clasps anyway...
