travelandleisure.com5 Easy Ways to Stay Fit on the Road, According to Hilary Rhoda and Sean Avery
American model Hilary Rhoda and former hockey player (now fiancé) Sean Avery know what it takes to sustain an athletic physique, and letting a jet-set lifestyle get in the way of“
No matter what, we always keep up our exercise routine on vacation,” says Avery. “During our last trip, our schedule included jump rope circuits and sprints down the beach.” Here, their five little secrets to maintaining a healthy lifestyle—no matter how many miles lie between you and your home gym.
1. Avoid eating on the plane. The food is usually very salty and seems to worsen jet lag, body stiffness, and swelling.
2. Exercise as soon as you land, even if it’s the last thing you want to do. “It’s good to get the body moving, and you’ll feel much better afterwards."
3. Run outside when the weather is nice. "It’s a great way to see the city you’re in."
4. Don’t give up on your regular fitness schedule, especially if you frequent brand-name studios. “If I’m lucky enough to be in cities like L.A.,” says Rhoda, “I can easily stick to the fitness routine I have in N.Y.C. by hitting up branches like Tracy Anderson Method and SoulCycle.”
fitness is not on that list.

Model Hilary Rhoda and hockey star Sean Avery dive into their first joint venture: a line of his-and-hers preppy-chic beachwear.
Runways and ice rinks may be their natural habitats, but fashion model Hilary Rhoda and her fiancé, the former New York Ranger Sean Avery, feel equally at home by the shore. “We’re very good at sitting on a beach for days when we need to decompress,” Avery says. In their six years together, the pair, who call New York home, have jetted to warm-weather destinations like Jamaica, St. Bart’s, and Tulum, Mexico, and spent their summers in the Hamptons.
Their travels became the inspiration for their just-launched capsule collection with swimsuit brand Solid & Striped. The line—neutral color-block one-pieces and bikinis, quick-dry ponchos and swim trunks, and a unisex chambray button-down—is informed by the duo’s polished sense of style, but also by sheer practicality. “I’m always stealing one of Sean’s shirts to throw over my bikini, and he wanted a bathing suit he could wear into town yet still look put together,” Rhoda says. “We wanted to create clothes that we’d want to wear ourselves—and see each other wearing."

You probably have some beach time scheduled this weekend. And then maybe a Father’s Day barbecue (or two!). But we’re giving you one more thing to add to your calendar: Check out supermodel Hilary Rhoda and her fiancé Sean Avery’s new capsule collection for Solid & Striped.
The stylish couple collaborated with the label on a classic beachwear line featuring clothes with a nautical vibe and a neutral color palette — basically, it’s perfect for a Hamptons getaway, and you’ll probably want to nab a piece — or three — before July 4th. Rhoda’s abs do an amazing job of selling the bikinis.
We chatted with Rhoda about the line, her style and what she thinks of Avery’s closet. Read the interview highlights below!
How involved was Sean in the design process?
“He was super-involved. He knows what makes a perfect fit, he knows quality fabrics, and he knows how a man should dress without looking too fussy or stylized. He has an elegant, effortless way of dressing and I think that’s come from him honing his style over the years and knowing what works for him.”
Do you try on outfits for him before big red carpet events?
“Yes! If I can’t decide between a few dresses before an event, I’ll try them on for him and he gives me his input — which is always spot-on!. The last time was for the CFDAs. I had the dress but couldn’t decide which pair of shoes was right. I tried on five different pairs, and he picked out the pair I wore, which were perfect, as they added a bit of toughness. Any other shoe would have been too dainty and feminine with the dress I was wearing.”
What’s one thing you want to ban from his closet for good?
“Honestly I am constantly stealing his clothes from him. He really doesn’t have one thing I’d want to get rid of. He has this awesome 3.1 Phillip Lim military jacket that he’s had for a few years, and I’ve just dusted it off and given it a second life.”
What’s your go-to summer uniform?
“Jean shorts and a chambray shirt.”
What’s the oldest thing in your closet?
“I’ve been doing a lot of spring cleaning lately with my wardrobe, and my rule is that I will only keep it if it’s worth passing onto my daughter someday. The oldest thing in my closet is probably one of those Chloé bags with the padlock on it. I bought it when I started modeling, so it’s sentimental.”
