Hosiery - Stylish Or Tacky?

Yankee hosiery terminology:

What we call pantyhose are tights that are very, very sheer and flesh-colored.

Tights are anything opaque, usually black, colors, or patterned.

We say "stockings" for both hold-ups and the kind of stockings you need a suspender belt for.

Aaaand there ya go.

I don't think it's tacky if the hose suits your skin tone. It's not like I can go with bare legs in the winter here, so I wear them with skirts sometimes. Black opaque tights work too sometimes, but for a more natural look there's nothing wrong with wearing hose.

Absolut, what if you want to wear pantyhose that are not your skintone? Is that considered tacky?

ok this has posted in wrong window 4 some reason can some mod delete it please thanks :flower:

Like somebody up there said, it's all a matter of wearing the proper hoisery with the proper outfit. Anything can look tacky if done wrong, but when done right tights etc can look fab.

I live in a cold climate but refuse to wear pants all winter. Black opaque tights can be very stylish and practical. I also love nude fishnets and leg warmers (together!). Don't laugh! I absolutely love the look with a cute skirt and boots..

I usually just wear black tights, but sometimes I have to wear something more sheer...I can't remember the last time I wore anything resembling 'nude' hose. But I am really pale so nudes don't usually work for me, I usually opt for a dark cream...

I don't have much of a choice though with 'hose' versus 'no hose' because I have scars on my legs.

I love elaborate lace pattern hosiery I think its beautiful, but ya no pantyhose I hate the open toe sandals + pantyhose look YUCK

there's this SUPER stylish girl in my uni and she wears capri jeans and lace hose with pumps and it looks SO good. I've never seen anyone wear them like that but I think it looks absolutely fabulous. I saw some clone girls (you know the ones in the tight juicy coulture suits and the fake tan and super bleached hair) looking questionably at her and then whispering

I find it so insulting that people are hostile towards people who have a different fashion sense and especially from those clone girls, they think they are so hot and "instyle" just because they can pay to wear the same overpriced costumes

 if one's gonna wear open toes sandals, then she should display nicely pedicured feet ... not pantyhose. I'm particular about my toenail being painted if I wear open toed sandals.

What do you guys think of seamed tights/hosiery? I've never tried them...

I am confused, because while I was in prep school everyone is required to wear stockings. I did not find it anything strange...

Why are "nude" stocking tacky? Girls wear them and it seems like they are barely noticable....

Am very confused.

i don't do hose or stockings really. they just don't fit me and the way i dress. i do really like the look of sheer black though. i do however love tights. i am addicted to skirts and tights are a much for me in the winter. i stick to black or white though. skin tones never look right on me because they sure don't come in my skin tone.

When I started wearing miniskirts a couple years ago I could not sans nylons because my legs aren't the best-but now I never wear sheers. I'd be better spending the money on striped, coloured, textured, or even lacy tights.

posterchild-I was one of the first girls at my school to try the lacy tight thing also but it was a pair of black lacy tights under my cropped black gauchos and with stiletto heels (open-toe, yes-December, yes) and everyone loved it! There's only a few of us at school though who try that trend but those who do are appreciative-and one of them is a super-rich girl who *gasp* does NOT own a Juicy jumpsuit. She uses her money to buy style.

Hosiery for men

What do you women think of opaque tights or pantyhose for men

If they're the right color and are necessary for the setting, yes.

I cringe when I see women wearing them with denim skirts or casual attire. So not necessary.

Interesting point jd255.
What are other people's opinions on wearing them with denim skirts or casual attire? I personally think its okay but I'm curious to know others opinions.

"overpriced costumes" and "clone girls" i love your opinion and your terms. I completly agree on judging others outfits posterchild!

I wear them, I like them

I wear sheer pantyhose. I like to wear them. I think they finish the outfit well and give me a sense of confidence about it.

I can't make suntan colored pantyhose work well for me though most of the time therefore I avoid them. The only times that I could wear suntan is with a black above-the-knee skirt and black boots, or under pants - but of course nobody would see the hosiery then. I just can't make it work when I expose my legs.

Like others have said. You can make hosiery tacky if you don't match it correctly to your outfit. Some outfits are better worn with sheer hosiery to see the other side of the coin.

This topic gets so many mixed reviews; I'm dying to know what everyone thinks when they see a woman walk by in a skirt with a pair of hose on. Some say they're so outdated; that keeping legs bare is more modern. Others think it "completes" a look. Personally I love hosiery, I think it’s sexy, and as long as you're not sporting a pair that’s 10 shades darker than the rest of you, I like the way it looks. I’m not talking about colored tights or patterns or anything, just hosiery in regular shades.

It's a must in the climate I live in... Althought I'm not a fan, I wouldn't use them If I sometimes didn't have to. But I think especially in winter, health comes first. But I prefer black pantyhose, nude or beige just usually look tacky, sometime they can look good (in sheer mostly I think).

Now colourful pantyhose I think is something I dislike very much: yellow, blue, red, pink etc. Definite NO.

if the hosiery matches the skintone and outfit, then sure. and the right shoes of course..

what i don't like are those 'skintone' pantyhose that look almost orange :ninja:

i love tights though. i have dark black ones, and i really like to wear them with colorful clothing and go nuts. :P i guess some people think its tacky but i love them

I think they are fine, but it really depends on what you're wearing.
Also consider age as well...I don't think girls under 20 should wear them, not age appropriate> for them i would say bare legs are fine.
