My quest is to develope a personal style much like the blueblood girls of East coast society. You know the type, born rich and stylish. For example Jackie Kennedy Onassis or Carolyn Besset Kennedy. I want to have that upper class style before "Sex and the City" and before socialites thought it was cool to act like Paris Hilton. What are their secrets? What makes them so utterly classy and timeless?

I think a sense of timeless elegance is important - posture and grace

Well, this isn't so secret, but money certainly helps.

money does not give you style as we have seen through miss paris hilton and the like but I think if you have style... yes money will get you all the things you need to look impeccable.... personally i think if you look at the style icons you spoke of, they had simple understated taste... carolyn to me is the epitome of style and no matter where she was she looked good and there was never a lot going on.... simple but great clothing and yes money gets us there....

what is most important is to develop one's own style, not mimic others! aspire to be the best version of yourself, not the illusion of anothers

Shall I send you a copy of the official manual? :ninja:

I think generally there is a sense that these women affect a style and stay with it from their early 20s on. There is no following of trends etc., for the most part. I think Babe Paley noted that nobody ever thought she looked as if she was aging because she started to dress "old" when she was so young (a gross paraphrase- )

I wouldn't have thought this is something you can adopt. Adapt for this century, get reading biographies and soon their analysis will be yours. As Belowen mentioned, posture and grace is what you need to begin and no doubt you know if this is yours :woot:

Become a ballerina for a few years...watch Rachel DeThame walking - she used to be a ballerina and she would look good in anything she has such beautiful poise...

Yes, posture is key. And a quiet kind of confidence. And perfect grooming.

I agree. Confidence and meticulous grooming are essential.

how to be classy: there's a real secret

look at Oscar dell la renta and the teh audience at hsi shows

go to catillain

Why copy someone else's style? I mean, see them just as a source of inspiration.
I dress fairly "classy" but I always add the color I love and adore - pink. And I will never wear anything I don't like.

Like a lot of you've said. A large part is confidence.

it's more complex than just developing your own style...

This women had money, and stylists! Unfortunately, it takes some money to look like money. Much of their clothing is composed of designer pieces. However, if you can hit Banana or GAP (stores lower on the ladder), you can still manage to look classy and timeless without spending all the dough.

And - yes, it does help if you have style in the first place. :flower:

Manners, Grooming, Elegance (Never tacky or over the top) and good-will understated attitude. :flower:

may i suggest simplicity in th things you do fashionwise? i mean, i always find people who're simple but elegant at the same time more classy than someone who's elegant but not simple in what they wear, the way the carry themselves....

may i add EDUCATION

.. cause no money in the world can buy ONe class... no clothes in the world can buy one class... either.. i see it every day

its the whole package..

being distant is better than being in the limekight; in monaco the REAL socialites are the ones who turn away when photographers wanna take their pics for some dodgy gossip magazine. ... and then you got thos eposing and waiting for the photographer to approach them... :yuk:

i'd say, it comes naturally :flower:
