How to dress like a socialite

^ I love Tinsley Mortimer, she's actually extremely well educated and has a lot under her belt. Her "fame" status only really arrived in the past 5 years, before that she was also more low-key. And I happen to love the way she dresses, she's extremely beautiful too.
I also love girls like Lauren Davis and Fabiola Beracasa who are also supposedly more famous than other socialites.

Also, there's a misconception that "socialites" only exist in the Western world, particularly New York and Los Angeles. But I've met a number of Arab socialites (because that's my original ethnicity) in Emirates, Bahrain and Dubai and they're some of the most well-dressed women I've ever seen. They're usually extremely modest in style but tend to overdo their jewellery and makeup.

Oh yes, spending daddy's money makes you a glorious person. Sorry, I just don't get this socialite-thing. You can earn your own money and give them to charity without being in the newspapers perfectly fine, that's what the rest of us do.

^ I think the "socialites only live to spend daddy's money" ideology is a big stereotype set by bimbos like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. The truth is there are MANY socialite girls who are actually extremely intelligent, extremely ambitious and extremely well behaved, but you never hear about them because they're uninterested in fame. So its easy to see how girls like Paris can single-handedly completely tarnish the reputation of the entire socialite population. Ivanka Trump is a good example; she's very hard working and actually values "daddy's money".

Lily van der Woodsen epitomizes the modern NY Upper East Side socialite style for me.

exactly!!! but these are the girls that nobody sees because they don't want to be on the press... sadly they are the ones who should be the role models

^then what's really the difference between how the so called "socialites" dress and how "normal" ppl dress themselves?

A socialite is a person who participates in social activities and spends a significant amount of time entertaining and being entertained at fashionable upper-class events.[1] Socialites are typically wealthy or try to appear to be. Socialites in the past used their social skills and connections to promote and raise funds for various charitable or philanthropic activities, usually to increase their own social status. Contemporary socialites may include persons considered by the media to have a certain notoriety such as Paris Hilton and Casey Johnson.

But they're still not spending money they earned themselves, no? What is so glorious about that? I really don't get it. And why would anyone dress like one?

I do agree with the comments that having a love and support of fine arts, quality food and wine, and education do go along with the style.
And then you can marry someone rich and be his well-trained puppy :woot:

I think it's nothing wrong with having loads of money, and I don't think it's wrong to use your dad's or your mum's money if they're rich, but I don't believe you can buy style or that money makes you a better person^^

How do you know? Girls like Lauren Davis are extremely self-sufficient and clearly don't need "daddy's money". And even if they are, so what? Haven't you ever asked your dad for money? I have. But it's how you spend it that really matters.
The word "socialite" didn't become a household term until we were introduced to the Hilton sisters. They became famous because they fit the "spoilt rich girl" stereotype so well.
Speaking of which, Nicky Hilton has established her own clothing label and has openly admitted "I'd be lying if I said that my last name didn't help me". She strikes me as quite mature and knows better than to deny the help of her daddy. Meanwhile Paris became so famous/infamous that it didn't matter who came after her, people had already made up their minds about socialites.
The "dressing like a socialite" idea is rubbish. There's no such thing as "socialite style", they're just people and don't have some kind of unified dress code. Lauren Davis wears Marni and Prada, Tinsley Mortimer wears Versace and Dylan Lauren wears Ralph Lauren. There really doesn't exist a "socialite style".

There is no difference. Socialites have about as much variety in their style as the rest of us. They can just afford tonnes more stuff than we can.
The stereotypical "socialite style" is wearing pinks and florals, big sunglasses, blingy heels, Starbucks in one hand and a cellphone in the other. Oh and really sl*tty hair.
The whole notion of "dressing like a socialite" is like saying "dressing like a nerd": there are giant stereotypes around it, but they really don't exist.

She would not be able to afford her lifestyle strictly on her Vogue pay.

^ That's probably true (though I'd probably research it), but she's none the less an independent and working female.

^ I agree, though I think that the term "socialite style" comes from a bygone era when a socialite was someone like Nan Kempner, Jackie Kennedy Onassis, or Gloria Vanderbilt. Though I do think there is a sort of polished look that a certain type of wealthy urban woman living on the Upper East Side aims for, I don't think her look would be an accurate depiction of the typical socialite. Fashion is too eclectic nowdays for there to be one generic socialite style.

A little OT, just out of curiosity, what would you consider sl*tty hair?

^ Lol, I mean like feathered hair or big bedroom hair. I suppose "sl*tty" isn't too appropriate

^ oh lol. Certainly not appropriate for the "the classy look"
