We all know that working out what to wear in the morning is something of a sartorial equation, but for Chinese designer Huishan Zhang fashion maths runs deeper than that and even provided inspiration for his spring/summer 2014 collection today. “It’s about Chinese mathematics meets Madeleine Vionnet,” said the Central Saint Martins-trained designer who is also a finalist for this year’s Dorchester Fashion Award. Models in pristine greens, whites and pinks aptly came out in precise four-at-a-time formation to show off beautiful lace, crystal-embellished and geometric fabricated dresses, cropped tops and skirts that were incredibly elegant, effortless yet luxurious - Zhang had also been inspired by couture techniques. It was a collection that showed progression and focus just as much as it did a strength of signatures: embroidery and an interlocking “8” pattern, eight being a lucky number in Chinese culture. --Jessica Bumpus
