Growing up in the Nineties in the sleepy Australian town of Mullumbimby, she was as far away from hip-hop as anyone could be.
But thanks to her debut album The New Classic Amethyst 'Iggy Azalea' Kelly has become a bona fide rap starlet.
After being released last week, the 23-year-old's album landed on the US' Billboard 200 Chart at number three, selling over 52,000 copies.
This makes her the most popular hip hop artist in America to come from Down Under, with most Australian rappers failing crack the US market.
The New Classic is also the highest charting album by a female rapper since Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in 2012.
Azalea recently told Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg that her moniker of The New Classic isn't a statement about her music, it's a comment on how the industry has changed.
'I represent a new style,' she explained, 'it's not me saying my stuff’s classic. It’s me saying I think hip hop’s evolving and the face of hip hop can be different…it can be me, it can be any colour from anywhere.’
The songstress, who grew up on Azalea Street in her hometown in New South Wales, has previously said she was outcast while growing up due to her infatuation with rap music.
She moved to the US at the age of 15 with the dream of making a career out of her passion and now, at the age of 23, she appears to have succeeded resoundingly.
