from fashionweekdaily...some local students are getting to go tonight for free...

When FashionWeekLive, IMG’s traveling runway show, lands in San Francisco tonight at the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion, over 100 lucky fashion students will number among the gorgeous guests. That’s because IMG has joined forces with San Francisco author and philanthropist Stacy Cohen to provide over 100 tickets for local fashion students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend the blow-out event.

Cohen, a benefactor of the event, hand-picked the local schools that would receive the tickets with the help of other FashionWeekLive notables Naomi Campbell and Francisco Costa. Naomi’s pick was City College of San Francisco, while Francisco, fresh from his mentoring moment at Otis College of Fashion and Design, chose the L.A.-based school as a recipient. Other schools included the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and the Academy of Art University, both of San Francisco. All of Cohen’s donations will be matched ticket for ticket by the company.

The evening will kick off with a champagne reception and pre-event cocktails, after which the students and other elite guests will be treated to an hour-long runway re-enactment featuring designers including Badgley Mischka, Chaiken, Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, and Zac Posen, and modeled by the likes of Naomi Campbell, Gemma Ward, Caroline Winberg, Erin Wasson, and Alek Wek. San Francisco designers Lily Samii and Colleen Quen have also been chosen to present select looks during the show.

“I am so proud to sponsor talented young designers that have never seen a live fashion show,” said Stacy Cohen, who added “giving these students a gift of a lifetime of inspiration means everything for the future of fashion.”

Houston is FULL of socialites so it's no surprise that show wasn't cancelled.

an excerpt from the wall street journal article...

"We see consumers as the most important part of the fashion food chain because they are the ones who are ultimately buying the product," says Fern Mallis, vice president of IMG Fashion. Because only a limited number of cities in the world boast thriving fashion industries, she adds, "there are only so many fashion weeks you can do." IMG says it plans to operate FashionWeekLive in at least 20 cities around the world by 2009.

IMG may also have overestimated how much money consumers are willing to pay to see an elaborate rehash of the New York shows. It is charging a minimum of $500 for a "gold" ticket and up to $1,500 for a "diamond" ticket, which includes front-row seats and access to a VIP lounge after the show. In Houston, the house was full, but only 50% to 60% of those in attendance paid for their tickets. The rest of the tickets were distributed to sponsors and celebrities. The price point, determined via focus groups, may be adjusted next season. "It's on our Monday morning quarterback list," Ms. Mallis says.

Still, IMG, is optimistic. The privately held company generates most of its revenue, estimated by analysts at $1 billion, from producing televised sports programming, managing athletes like Tiger Woods and licensing and consulting. Chuck Bennett, senior corporate vice president, says FashionWeekLive is analogous to IMG's successful "Stars on Ice" tour, which features Olympic figure skaters performing for the public. The event has grown to 70 cities around the world since it began in the early 1990s. "We've done this before," Mr. Bennett says.
