Actress, campaigner, wife, mother, empowerer – JADA PINKETT SMITH has many roles and excels at them all. She talks to ALISON PRATO about playing the bad guy, getting better with age and laughing off the rumors.

To say that Jada Pinkett Smith is a superwoman is an understatement. A fierce, outspoken actress who grew up on the tough streets of Baltimore, she has managed, through a combination of talent and determination, to become one of Hollywood’s most solid stars – with roles in everything from big-screen franchises (Madagascar, The Matrix) to TV’s Hawthorne, the nursing drama for which she was nominated for several NAACP Image Awards.

And, of course, you can’t talk about Pinkett Smith without talking about her mega-talented family: husband Will Smith, 45, and children Jaden, 16, and Willow, 13, plus Trey, 21, from Smith’s previous marriage. Being a strong, supportive, dedicated wife and mother in a family that comes under such intense scrutiny is surely a superpower all of its own.

While the family business is making blockbusters (top-grossing Smith collaborations include I Am Legend, The Pursuit of Happyness, After Earth and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa), Pinkett Smith is heading back to the small screen this fall, where she’ll play ruthless villain Fish Mooney in Gotham. Furthering the DC Comics superhero franchise, Gotham follows the backstory of Commissioner James Gordon and his early relationship with young Bruce Wayne before his Batman evolution. “Playing a villain is really about diving into your own personal shadows. I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but it’s definitely fun,” Pinkett Smith says.

Fun is something the actress makes a point of having. And being part of the Smith family seems like a blast. Recent photographs of the 42-year-old with her husband (the pair married in 1997), kissing, holding hands and frolicking in the water during a Hawaii vacation, would have melted even the hardest heart. And Pinkett Smith, by the way, was rocking a string bikini like a true superwoman, looking even better and stronger than ever.

“You know what?” she says with a laugh, “I don’t know if I feel stronger than ever, but I do feel better than ever.” She’s sitting at a sidewalk table at a cafe in downtown Manhattan, resplendent in a Gucci jacket, shorts and Jason Wu shoes. Her nails, covered in Marc Jacobs polish and shaped into points, resemble claws. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that it’s about being physical every day. You don’t have to go to the gym if that’s not your thing. You can go outside your door and walk around your block.” She continues with increasing enthusiasm, erupting into laughter (one thing about talking to Pinkett Smith: she makes even typical topics seem amusing): “You can take a brisk walk, a light jog, a slow stroll if you want! I feel like, as I’ve gotten older, I look better than ever and I work out less. I’m never in the gym for [more than] 45 minutes.”

Instead, and as evidenced in paparazzi shots throughout the years, she paddleboards, snowboards and even roller skates. “I do old-school roller skating,” she says, cracking up. “I love it. That’s just how I grew up.”

Pinkett Smith was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, by her single mother, Adrienne, who gave birth when she was very young, then battled with drug addiction until Jada was 17. They lived with Pinkett Smith’s grandparents then; now, Adrienne lives with the Smiths in New York. Pinkett Smith and her mother make a point of taking a 20-minute walk together every night. “I love talking to my mom,” she says. “I love spending time with her.”

The actress’ take on parenting is inspired by her own upbringing and is something she has been very vocal about. “I want my kids to be happy and I want them to be themselves. I was saying to a friend the other day, ‘Remember, our kids are not us.’ They’re not. Sometimes we’re trying to fix things that happened to us or projecting [onto them], and that’s a terrible, terrible trap.”

The Smiths were called into some controversy in May this year when 13-year-old Willow posted an Instagram picture of herself laying in bed next to a shirtless 20-year-old actor named Moises Arias. Naturally, Pinkett Smith jumped to Willow’s defense. “Here’s the deal,” she told gossip website TMZ. “There was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation. You guys are projecting your trash onto it and that’s not cool.”

More than a month later, she is steadfast in her support of her daughter. “Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” she says, shaking her head. As much as she likes to joke and laugh, Pinkett Smith is serious about the subject of how women grow up today. “It’s really tough. I feel like the connection to the value of women on a bigger scale has decreased tremendously. Even though you look and go, ‘Women have so many opportunities,’ it’s like, ‘Yeah, but at what cost?’ Are women valued for being women, or are women valued when they have more masculine qualities? Men and women encompass both female and masculine energies, but it seems like when the feminine is present, it’s not respected.”

With a strong mother and grandmother to help shape her personality, Pinkett Smith has always been a huge supporter of female empowerment. In 2012, after being shown a viral charity campaign video by Willow, Pinkett Smith went to Washington to testify on sex trafficking to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Currently, she is working with CNN on a documentary about human trafficking. “When your daughter comes to you and is like, ‘Hey Mom, do you know that there are people selling girls my age for sex in this country?’ My first response was, ‘Oh no, that doesn’t happen here.’ Then I did my research and I thought, ‘How could this be going on here and I not know?’ I felt ashamed and, being a woman in an industry that has a voice, I just felt this enormous amount of responsibility to at least let other people know. ‘Guess what guys? It’s not just happening over there. It’s happening right here.’ I just had to get that word out.”

She has spent time speaking with survivors and convicted traffickers in jail, and says the lessons have been immeasurable. “The thing I’ve realized about sex trafficking is that every single woman is susceptible to being trafficked. It doesn’t matter what your background is, your economic status, what language you speak or the color of your skin. A lot of people want to believe it only happens to poor girls, and that’s not true. When I talk to these girls, I see myself, I see my mother, I see my daughter, I see my girlfriends, I see my sons. There are a lot of boys being trafficked as well, so this is a people problem.”

The Smiths aren’t just people who talk the talk. They walk the walk, giving away millions of dollars to charity each year. “There’s nothing that gives me more joy than to see people do well,” the actress shrugs.

Her husband is at the top of that list, and while she says there is no secret to keeping a marriage thriving, Pinkett Smith is proud to say that their relationship is stronger now than it’s ever been. “We used to have all these rules, [but] as you go on in your relationship, you just get into a flow,” she says. “The thing I love is being in a place where it’s just like, Will, to me, encompasses everything. It’s almost as if calling him 'my husband' is too small of a word for what he means in my life — and especially how I feel we, as women, identify the idea of a husband. I really had to mature and expand that. I think I had a very stuck idea of what a husband looks like, what a wife should be. Once I broke all of that, a whole new world opened for me and man, oh, man, I got to see him in all his glory. And so that’s what it’s evolved into. And I’m just ecstatic about it.”

Over the years, tabloid headlines have accused the Smiths of unfounded infidelities, of having an “open marriage”, and even questioned their sexualities, but Pinkett Smith shrugs off the rumors. “The coping technique is knowing what the truth is – there’s no better technique. When you know that what’s going on in your house is so the opposite [of what’s being said], and you also know that when there’s mystery, people fill in the gaps, that’s OK,” she says. “And then you look back at it and look at how creative people can be, and it’s kind of entertaining. We can laugh because it’s so ridiculous. But I get it. I don’t take it personally.”

One thing Pinkett Smith does take personally? Bath time. It’s the only moment she can completely take off that proverbial superhero cape and unwind. “My bath is like my temple. I have all the potions, all the salts, all the candles. When the door’s shut, it’s the only excuse I have not to answer anybody.”
