Thanks for the scans MissMagAddict. One of Gaultier's most visionary collections: so many ideas that other designers would rip-off and make it their own. This collection, followed by the equally daring and visionary "Rabi Chic" was fashion history in the making of its time. Timeless. I'm sure back in the day, McQueen was eagerly devouring Gaultier's perfect mixing of rich cultures and immaculate tailoring and innovative cutting-- and showmanship.

Joanna Lumley wore a suit in Ab Fab in 1992 from a collaboration Jean Paul Gaultier did with another brand which for the life of me I can't remember, I remember seeing one without the embellishment a few years ago, not as interesting as Joanna's though.

One of the first "designer" looks I wanted for myself: leopard coat, spiked bleached hair and cigarette. And I was, like, 12.

President Eisenhower's famous idiom "the military-industrial complex" is the starting point of this Gaultier outfit. Olive-green and cargo pants suggest the military or paramilitary. But the military rigor is impugned by indefatigable graffiti. Graffiti--that paradigm for art historian Kirk Varnedoe of high art informed by low art--defaces the military appearance. A medium of defilement and of language--often slightly vulgar in this instance--sheathes the facade of the proper soldier. Given Gaultier's many ingenious permutations of sailors, his cognate transfiguration of the army man is hardly surprising.
