THE SHRIMP SHOCKED THEM
There she was, the world's highest paid fashion model, snubbing the iron-clad conventions of fashionable Flemington with a dress five inches above the knee, NO hat, NO gloves and NO stockings!
The shockwaves were still rumbling around fashionable Melbourne last night when Jean Shrimpton -- The Shrimp -- swore she hadn't realised she awas setting off such an outraged upheaval at Flemington on Saturday.
"I don't see what was wrong with the way I looked," she said. "I wouldn't have dressed differently for a race meeting anywhere in the world.'
For my money, she looked tremendous -- but Flemington was not amused. Fashion-conscious Derby Day racegoers were horrified. 'Insulting' ... 'a disgrace' ... 'how dare she?' ... ! If the skies had rained acid not a well-dressed woman there would have given The Shrimp an umbrella.
For hours, Flemington had baked and sweltered in 94-deg. heat, waiting for the late arrival of the English girl billed as the most beautiful on earth.
She walked in serene and poised, dressed in this ultra-short shift she designed herself, showing a lovely amount of lissom leg totally unhhindered by nylon.. Her long hair swung about in the hot wind ...
Fashionably-dressed ladies who had been dying to see what heavenly oufit Jean would be wearing seemed very angry.
It was hardly the sort of costume they must have expected -- especially as the VRC flew Jean out here from America to present Fashions on the Field prizes.
Last night, 22-year-old Jean said she hadn't known that Melbourne placed such heavy emphasis on conformity.
'I haven't decided what to wear to the Melbourne Cup,' she said. 'I suppose I'll have to give it a lot more thought ...'

I love, love, love Jean Shrimpton. Everyone always goes on about Twiggy being the model of the 60's but imho there was never any question, Jean was no.1!
