fashion.elleAt last night’s dinner celebrating Balmain‘s newfound interest in social media, Olivier Rousteing was gushing about his date to the Met Ball. “She could wear a white t-shirt, and I would be so proud,” he said of Joan Smalls. The model’s topped fashion’s favorites list for almost two years now and is the best arm candy a guy could ask for, but she won’t wear a white t-shirt (even though she could pull it off). She hasn’t, however, picked a dress. “We will know Monday!”
Rousteing didn’t invite Smalls solely because she’ll look perfect in anything, but because he actually really likes talking to the model. Turns out she’s as smart and interesting as she is beautiful—and those things matter when you’re sitting next to someone at a four hour dinner. As for the designer himself—Rousteing might be the most charming, genuine and downright bubbly designer we’ve ever met—he says he will wear a “bow.” He hasn’t worn one since childhood, but figures his first Met Ball demands something special.
two of my faves!Joan Smalls- The Puerto Rican Knockout | FashionTV's Model of the Week
Posted on 4th May 2012 | Model of the Week |
After three years of little attention from the fashion world, this Puerto Rican beauty decided to take her modeling career one step at a time. Ultimately, her patience led to a major break-through. Since then she has become one of the hottest models in the fashion industry and now she is FashionTV’s Model of the Week!
Joan Smalls, the Puerto Rican born beauty, began modeling at the age of nineteen. Even though she starred as the face of Ports 1961, and walked on the runways of Diane von Furstenberg, Tracy Reese, and Heatherette, among others, her modeling career took a long time to get to where it is today.
Between 2007 and 2010, Joan Smalls wasn’t considered as a star in the fashion industry. Apart from appearing in Ricky Martin’s “It’s Alright” music video, Smalls was featured in both Cosmopolitan and V magazine editorials. However, the young model sensed that she could achieve much more through her natural beauty. Instead of giving up, Joan Smalls signed a contract with a different modeling agency, and her luck instantly changed.
Rocking the Runway
Joan Smalls’ big breakthrough occurred at the start of 2010 when she walked exclusively for the Givenchy show in Paris. In addition, she appeared on the runways of Gucci, Burberry, Prada, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, and Anna Sui.
Shortly after her big break, Steven Meisel photographed Smalls for an Italian Vogue editorial and Patrick Demarchelier shot her for German Vogue. Finally Joan Smalls was ranked as a rising star in the fashion industry, with lots of attention, offers, and contracts coming her way.
The following Fashion Week seasons, Smalls walked on a few of the best runway shows, including Dior, Gaultier, Gucci and Gianfranco Ferre.
One of her most memorable appearances on the runway was during the Givenchy menswear show in Paris. Smalls went on the stage along with some of the most beautiful male models and stunned the audience with her sexy-yet-sophisticated walk.
Many top designers chose Smalls as the first face for their shows, an honor that is saved only for the most stunning gals. During the spring 2012 Milan Fashion Week the Puerto Rican beauty was in the #3 spot of FashionTV’s First Face countdown. Among other top brands, Smalls was the first face at Gucci.
During the fall 2012-2013 Paris Fashion Week, Smalls was ranked 8th on the First Face list. This time she was one of the most popular models on the catwalks, and walked for top brands such as Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier. She was the first face at the Gareth Pugh fashion show.
Cover Girl
Throughout her modeling career, many fashion magazines have featured Joan Smalls in their editorials or covers. Leading fashion photographers were behind the cameras when Smalls posed. Steven Meisel photographed her for W, David Sims shot her for French Vogue and Mario Testino photographed Smalls for Vogue.
Ad Star
Joan Smalls’ exotic beauty has granted her lots of amazing ad campaigns. During 2010 she became the face of Gucci and posed for Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott for the Givenchy fall ad campaign. The next year she became the face of Roberto Cavalli and Stella McCartney. In addition Smalls was photographed for David Yurman and Gucci fall ad campaigns. At the end of 2011 Smalls signed a contract with Estee Lauder cosmetics.
Fashion Forward
Joan Smalls is in her early 20s and based on her patience, hard work and amazing figure and smile, we are certain that she is going to be the star of the modeling scene for a few more seasons. With such a natural beauty, top designers and fans all over the world are just waiting to see her walk down the catwalk again and again…
