The first time I noticed Joan was at a Ports 1961 collection, February 2007.
I spoke to her backstage, complementing as I wondered "where did she come from"? Hadn't seen her before but a few months later at an ad shot on a desert for Ports 1961 stood out... and beautiful Joan was the model.
Joan Smalls has gotten a new lease on a career that was stamped in a different direction.
In the last two months her unusual journey has taken flight. She has had a rebirth as a model.
Being of mixed cultral parentage, a caribbean father and puerto rican mother, she was raised in Puerto Rico, close to her family that includes two sisters.
Although she has an apartment in Queens, NY, when she is not working she is in PR.
I love how she is referred to as "Joan Smalls" not Joan alone but "Joan Smalls".
What I also love is that I selected her before the "re-birth" to be featured in my documentary film Invisible Beauty... Fortunately for all, Joan Smalls is no longer invisible.
