Joan Smalls

I am becoming increasingly disgusted by a lot of members of the fashion spot community. The cattiness and contempt over Joan's career and continued success is out of control. This sort of behavior is so childish. Some even seem hostile at times.

I know some members are young, but come on!!!

It's one thing to give constructive criticism, that's perfectly fine, but...
I've notice some poster always try to bash her work and discredit her accomplishments. They act as if all the work she's done over the years was easy to book and they make it seem as if it is handed to every single model in the industry.
Nothing she does is ever right or "oh it's no big deal." I mean, really?

They seem to forget what an amazing achievement and how impressive it is that Joan, as a women of colour, has become a Supermodel and that she is booking all these major Blue-chip and commercial jobs in this Post-Supermodel era.

Under the guise of an "opinion" some of these members continue to put her down every single chance they get, and If one takes the time to check their posting history it becomes as clear as day how Bias their "opinions" are.

Just because your favorite Model or Blip isn't booking the jobs that you think she should be booking doesn't give you the right to nitpick, down play and discredit another models career achievements every single chance you get.

It's Sad!

Joan is always focused and she'll continue to work hard and book major jobs despite all the hate. They'll try to bring her down, but she'll always work harder. She's a fighter!

I'm a little bit disturbed by this comment because I don't think you would've said this if Karlie or Saskia were in this instead of Joan. Because Joan is a model of color, she's supposed to "do the right thing" & not work with Sgura. Why don't I hear the same comments when Sgura works with white models? Are they not held to the same standards because they weren't the ones affected by his blatant display of ignorance? What a ridiculous double standard that is.

I don't know what CTM meant with his comment, but I don't think it's about doing the right thing, more about pride. When Sgura wore blackface, he basically outed himself as racist against black people. In other words, he thinks he is superior to black people, and therefore superior to Joan. I personally would not choose to work with someone who looks down on me for my race, but maybe I'm incorrect and Sgura is not racist, just ignorant. I don't blame Joan for working with him though, perhaps she gave him the benefit of the doubt.

What a double standard this is. EVERYONE should be disgusted by Sgura's act of racism, not just Joan & not just black people. If a white model were to partake in this exact same shoot with Sgura, we wouldn't even be having this discussion right now. Why is it OK for a white model to shoot with him? Because he didn't "look down on her race?" That is flat out hypocrisy at it's finest. If Joan, even Naomi or Liya, decided not to work with any racists in the industry, then they wouldn't have the careers they have right now. Sometimes you leave a bigger impact based on what you DO rather than what you don't do. Basically what I'm saying is that Joan is proof that models of color can be more than flavors of the month, & if working with ignorant a**holes like Sgura is what she has to do to prove that, then I say more power to her. She shouldn't be criticized for advancing her career.

Exactly.

Chanel resort ads aren't a big deal…..
She's a terrible model…..
She shouldn't work with Sgura because she's black….

I can't wait to hear the next one. Care to take any guesses?

^Preach!

Joan's Vogue Australia May 2012 cover/editorial remains a favourite of mine.

Giampalo Sgura, always a hot mess

She looks great in the H&M campaign, though

Joan is in LA right now. Mert & Marcus are also in LA right now. I hope they're shooting a campaign together, but it may just be for a Halloween party.

I still want to see her cover British Vogue, Vogue Paris and an OG American Vogue cover. Also an OG Italian Vogue cover with an OG Editorial. :-)

The Big Four!! :) I'm sure those are Joan's major career goals to conquer.

She looks sensational at that event. I love that she has a signature look on the red carpet now (the bold lip). It makes her instantly recognizable.
