The F/W 2026.27 Show Schedules...

From Beverly to Joan
The return of ethnic decade
As fashion celebrates all things Seventies in the spring/summer '11 shows, the runways become the most diverse we've seen them in years
It's interesting to see so many seventies-inspired collections during this spring/summer '11 runway show season, and then to look back at actual photos from that period such as this one. The decade was a particularly busy time for Beverly Johnson, pictured here in 1976 at an awards show in Munich with Michael Douglas. This photo was taken three years after she became the first black woman to appear on the cover of American Vogue and one year before she had the same honor with Vogue Italia.
The Seventies was also a particularly exciting time for black models in general with Yves Saint Laurent, the first designer to hire women of color for his runways and ad campaigns, converting the world to the wonders of black beauty. Look through any catalog of the couturier's work; you'd be hard-pressed to see a show that didn't feature Pat Cleveland, Donyale Luna, Iman or Katoucha Sims.
So it's quite ironic to see that many of the spring/summer '11 shows that reference fashion's most ethnically diverse decade would, in turn, be equally assorted. Marc Jacobs's show, which gave a nod to Rive Gauche with boldly glam and colorful dresses and jumpsuits, featured the most black models of the entire season so far: Rose Cordero, Chanel Iman,Joan Smalls, Melodie Monrose, Jourdan Dunn, Shena Moulton and the list goes on. The most beautiful part is that Jacobs isn't the only designer who went beyond the runway tokenism that plagued most of the Aughties. It's now not such a big deal to see more than one black girl on a runway show (remember when Liya Kebede was virtually all we had?).
Granted it's still early in the runway season. We've only seen New York and London. But it's exciting to see fashion return to this feel-good place where it can embrace a full spectrum of beauty. Let's hope it lasts longer than two weeks.
