Her figure is looking soooo good, love that last outfit, can't say I'm a big fan of the ombre hair however.

I really hope she gets a campaign :/ can anyone id her top/skirt? I love how she's using those givenchy shoes everywhere

No Lavin... will Joan even score Gucci?

It's a sad state of affairs when the reigning Number #1 model in the world can't even book a decent campaign!!! I would understand if after she became an Icon she would slow down a bit in the booking department, but not scoring any Top campaigns while being the REIGNING Number # 1 model in the world is quite frankly disgusting.

Being a women of colour in this industry is still a major uphill battle. Joan still has a lot to prove. She still needs to Break a lot of Boundaries!!! A LOT!

I would move Joan to ICON to save face and crown a New Number #1 asap, because clearly the Fashion Industry could care less if Joan is the number # 1 model in the world or not!

No only girl campaigns? Where's her Vogue Paris Cover? Her Vogue Uk Cover? Her Vogue Italia ONLY GIRL editorial with Cover?

I don't see the point of having connections with the top movers and shakers of the fashion industry if it doesn't translate into booking major Campaigns and Covers?

It pains me to say but IMO, I'm sure if either Karlie/Arizona or any of Joan's Caucasian counterparts had been crowned the Number #1 model in the world they would of been booking every Top campaign and Cover under the sun.

How humiliating. I truly feel sorry for Joan.

I don't think Karlie or Arizona being crowned #1 would've done much for their careers either. The problem with the industry right now is the extremely high turn over rate with models. It seems like 70% of the campaigns are being taken by newbies & rising stars every season, leaving the established girls & icons to fight for the remaining 30%. Karlie only has JPG & Arizona has nothing so far, so it's not like Joan is alone in the struggle. The industry doesn't care about nurturing models' careers anymore. Not that many photographers/clients are loyal to any model for more than 2 years. It's ridiculous. I can only pray that Joan has a better season for S/S 14, but she's doing the best she can with the "support" she's got. :(

^I disagree to a degree. Had they been crowned Number # 1 they would of been unscathed.
I know Daria/Karlie/Arizona/Liu aren't faring well this season but Joan is the Number#1 model in the World. That should count for something. It has in the past, why should it be any different now?

^^I agree that the turn over rate is so fast now. The industry is much different today than when Raquel was #1 and thats not even that long ago. I'm growing increasingly disenchanted with the modeling industry. There aren't any true stars anymore and the fault lies with clients and photographers.

I refuse to believe she didn't get Lanvin or Gucci. Meisel or M&M better step up to the plate.

dont worry

she is a classic beauty
she will probably be here for at least 10 more years
im sure she will score MANY campaigns in the next years to follow

the same happened with doutzen (doutzen probably got pucci this season)

It's different because the industry is obsessed newbies right now, more than they've ever been. You can say that Joan isn't doing that well, but hardly anyone in the top 10 is doing well. In the 2005-2010 era, it was unfathomable to think a newbie could get a Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Dior campaign in their first season, but it's happening in this new era. Back then, those campaigns went to the models in the top 10. Now the top 10 girls have to fight for what little is left after the newbies are done dominating. Nothing is guaranteed for the established models anymore. I do think it's ridiculous that she hasn't landed anything big, but like I said, I don't think Karlie or Arizona would've faired any better as #1 in this current state of affairs. The newbie domination isn't ending anytime soon.

Yeah, and IMO some of these newbies are overrated. Joan and many of the "vet" models bring so much more to the table. I hope Joan bagged Gucci.

Joan Smalls (turning to me) after Jean Paul Gaultier, Paris, July 2013

after JPG show Joan was, as you can see, pretty busy in posing to photograpers.
I'm very glad she found time to turn back to give me these shoots! :)
