Supermodel Jodie Kidd has gone for a dramatic change of look, cutting off her famous golden locks in favour of a short and sassy style.

Though she says she's long thought about chopping off her famed mane, it took a natural phenomenon to get her to the hairdresser. Apparently, the avid polo player's naturally wavy blonde hair was causing her some trouble during the summer heatwave, giving the catwalk star an added incentive to make the leap.

"It was so hot, and my hair was getting in the way a bit," she said, adding later: "I thought, 'What the hell', and went to a salon." Though it was a spontaneous decision, the model was in good hands, having her new look created by celebrity hairstylist Paul Hanlon.

That's not to say that, like anyone undergoing a big change while in the stylist's chair, Jodie wasn't in for a shock. "When I looked in the mirror it was a bit worrying," she admits, "but it's so much easier to deal with."

Jodie Kidd is thanking her lucky stars today after she narrowly escaped being shot during a burglary at her Barbados home. The leggy British model was asleep in bed with her boyfriend Tarquin when she woke to find an intruder standing over her bed. The brave pair attempted to chase him off, but had to dive for cover when the man opened fire. "Jodie was terrified," a close friend said last night. "She found a man standing over her. She screamed to raise the alarm and the pair chased him from the house. But he started firing shots at them. They both dived on to the ground and luckily were not hurt. Jodie found the incident very upsetting and she is reviewing security at the family home." Police from Bridgetown, where Jodie's family mansion is situated, were unable to comment but a spokesperson confirmed: "There was an incident at Holders House in the early hours of March 1 with an intruder who was disturbed by residents. I can't remember what she looks like now . I remember seeing ads of her when she was very young. She must have done really well for herself since she lives in Barbados. (It might be her vacation home). if anyone has any scans of her I would love to see them.
