JULIA & RENATA
What Mexican designers have more buzz than Hud Morgan's phone on vibrate? Julia and Renata, the Guadalajara sisters so popular, they only use their first names. With a throng of fans outside their show and a runway jammed with fresh, striking clothes, we're proud to report this label is worth the hype.
The show opened with speakers blaring Darwin's Theory of Evolution, followed by a trio of models chasing each other down the runway. True to Darwin's hypothesis, one design knocked out the next—a gray tank made from shredded crinoline sailed past a blue chiffon tunic dress paired with slouchy navy slacks, only to be shoved out of place by a royal blue bandeau dress, sharply pleated and tailored entirely out of terrycloth. If Juicy actually WAS couture...
Next came another slew of dresses, scoop-necked and silk, with bands of colors surrounding the high waists in belted bands of fabric. Their shapes were short and billowy, and looked like Cynthia Rowley's mod spring collection (minus the plastic shoes and spacey silver color palette).
Other highlights: a peach bustier dress bound with a jet silk band, a hot pink jersey halter gown with lilac embroidery designed to mimic a solar system, and a purple off-the-shoulder dress with a big belt in stiff fabric, folded to look like origami. The collection was a little bit Jetsons, a lot Marc by Marc, and weirdly moving at the end, when the designers AND the models burst into tears on the runway and hugged each other for what seemed like eons.
It's a scene we hope gets repeated in Bryant Park sometime soon...
