JW Anderson F/W 2020.21 : Toni Smith by Tyler Mitchell

Decent at best
Creative? Not
Tyler changed his cream beige fabric background to blue that’s about it.
He does appear to being improving though comparing to the Beyoncé and Zendaya AV ‘stuff’ he was praised about

I like it, although I know Tyler gets alot of hate here.
I'm not the biggest Tyler fan but they are all really a bunch of angry birds. Always complaining about one thing or the other. They'll never admit if Tyler has a good shoot so why not stop looking at things he does? It's not that hard. Instead of constantly hating maybe channel that energy into boosting the work of the people you like.

I like it, but anyone would succeed with a crew like that. Julia Wagner on set, Benjamin Bruno AND Jawara?
It seems this is what he needs in order to turn out impressive work. An all-star crew. Remove all these people and it would have been his usual mediocrity (e.g his US Vogue covers).

The last image is the strongest but the third last one is terribly composed.

Very strong and beautiful. It’s a beautiful campaign even if I’m still frustrated by the work of Tyler with JW.
He is a good photographer but I wish he pushed it harder and made it more distinctive, because this is essentially a Jamie campaign but with black people.

In a way, the two last shots are a step in the right direction because it’s something you wouldn’t expect from them.

I hope more brands will work with Tyler. I would love to see him do something more grown up, maybe sexier, with more tension than the romanticism he is used to do.

The results are lovely. Gorgeous color-palette. Although how much input Tyler had with the set design/production— which is what is so distinctive of the imagery, only the team knows. Because without those strong components, there’s nothing memorable otherwise.

The static poses take it into lookbook territory. I like the shot with her back turned the best because it actuality has some movement. They should have went wild with such a great set.

The way he inserting himself in the shoot is ridiculous. But lovely photos btw.
