JW Anderson S/S 2020 by Tyler Mitchell

Perfect campaign, I love Tyler's photos and Im here for the cast. Some comments on this topic explains why we need representativeness in campaigns, very problematic

I’m feeling quite embarrassed to read a few things here. White people complaining about the full black casting? Sorry but that sounds beyond stupid.
Phoebe didn’t cast any black girl for her debut at Céline, Prada didn’t book a black woman in DECADES for an adv campaign. The same for Raf Simons at Dior.

And let me tell you something: how are you feeling now is how non-white people felt when they didn’t find someone like them in the magazines or massive media.
I’m white just like most of you but I’m not only concerned about my privileged ***.

I'm Jewish. Am I white? never mind.

The whole point is that we are moving forward from that point. no?..That race is aesthetics, that a race as a whole represents something. anything.

It certainly doesn't make me feel alienated or discriminated against one bit. It's not that I can't see myself in a person with a different skin tone/ hair texture. It's not about me.

I'm trying to take part in the bigger discussion; I'm wondering about their decision in this ad, Because saying there is nothing in it is naive.

The description on his website does not bring up the topic, which is expected.
JW ANDERSON RELEASES SPRING SUMMER 2020 CAMPAIGN

London-based luxury fashion brand JW Anderson releases its Spring Summer 20 campaign featuring both Men’s and Women’s collection. As with the brand’s previous campaign, Spring Summer 20 was shot by renowned photographer and filmmaker Tyler Mitchell and styled by long time Jonathan Anderson collaborator, Benjamin Bruno. The campaign features some of the same models from the previous campaign, plus some new faces who were street cast exclusively for this project. In Mitchell’s signature style, the images feel young and carefree, aligning perfectly with JW Anderson’s playful aesthetic. The motifs of spirited elevation and empowerment on stilts for AW19 have evolved into a giant oversized tricycle and other signifiers of British suburban youthfulness for SS20.

Great campaign! I look at these ads and see beauty, youth, and a composed confidence throughout that elevates and gives character to the clothing and sets. The first image is particularly glorious

Comments like these below, in 2020, literally blow my mind as the fact is: without having a 'racial reasoning' or 'explanation', your brains cannot comprehend why there would be a selection of a cast featuring all non white subjects. What is it you need to get??

Sure, there could also be a reason, ie JW and TM simply loved each of the models, but why does there have to be a reason beyond that?

The subject of diversity is a constant issue due to VAST and problematic imbalance that has mainly leaned towards predominantly WHITE representation and 'ideals', be it in campaigns, in editorials or on runway etc.
This is why concerted efforts to present much more than that is soo valuable, multifaceted AND WONDERFUL! One all non-white campaign doesn't suddenly swing the balance especially against 10, 20 or more campaigns doing the opposite!

In truth, this highlights the probable lack of diversity directly in the lives of who have commented searching for a 'reasoning'.
Because when in your own life you interract and have friends, family and/or work with diverse range to people beyond a surface level, and in relation to these ads black people - you would already understand that black people are not and should not just to be featured/included within the cultural or stereotypical viewpoints that may seen more widely in the mainstream, and can and should be featured outside of these parameters.

I would be fascinated to see the commentors below give examples where they have written such 'critiques' under 'all white cast' campaigns or editorials, because we all know there are plentyyy to choose from....

Not very diverse....

I'm all for diversity but I don't really get what he's trying to do here. Were these collections inspired by black culture? If not, then this campaign certainly implies it which I think is just wrong.

I guess there is an explanation for the all black cast?
It is bothersome and distracting.

I'm guessing this campaign conmemorates black history month.

It is amusing and also quite hypocritical to see a fully white cast and be like: "Horrible, no diversity at all..." and see a full black cast and go full on "Yaaass, b*tch, bring it". Do people know what diversity is? It is a mix of people from all ethnicities. Where are white people here? Asian? Hispanic? If it is a one-time effort - lovely, if this is seen as a counteract towards whitewashed fashion for centuries - no, this is not how you do diversity. Stop calling diversity putting lots of any single non-white race people, it just will add the fuel to the fire.

AND YET:

It certainly doesn't make me feel alienated or discriminated against one bit. It's not that I can't see myself in a person with a different skin tone/ hair texture. It's not about me.

LOLLLLLL!!!!
Why lie to yourself when you literally said you find it "bothersome and distracting" - which means you in fact CANNOT see beyond the all black cast? Why do you need explanation for the cast?

If it isn't that you are unable to appreciate or relate to someone who doesn't look like you, what exactly is your issue?
As you haven't commented on the photography, or the clothing, or the set?

Asking for a friend....:alien:

I did not expect my comment to be interpreted negatively, February is black history month in the USA and the sepia pictures in old timey bikes certianly bring the idea of history to the forefront. Pamboy was the one to mention that link and it doesn't seem farfetched to me since Loewe already conmemorated pride month all around the Chueca neighborhood in Madrid.

You just gave a "reasoning", so thank you for that; It's the most obvious one and I wondered if there's something beyond just that.

And making assumptions about my life and interactions is ridiculous for you to do.

I doubt that you were actually laughing out loud.

Lie to myself about what exactly?

Bothersome is probably the wrong word; I thought it can be used with a less "negative" connotation. maybe curious is a better word.

I don't have an issue; the world has an issue and I'm relating to the conversation.

And I think it's a great campaign, one of the best of the season; evocative

I would like this if Tyler didn’t already rely solely on identify politics to float his entire career because let’s ALL be honest he isn’t talented enough to be where he is at all.

I honestly do wish he would push himself and try something beyond trios on lifeless props in a field but again he isn’t what I would consider that talented nor as deep as he’s made out to be and claims. When can the IG photogs become out of style finally?

5/10 and that’s because I like JW.
