Karl Lagerfeld vs. France..

35 hr work weeks ARE really small.

+ I don't know why everybody have a problem with these 35 hours work week
Who wouldn't work less time and earn the same amount of money?
More free time to spend with your family/friends, travelling, (go shopping), etc B)
That works! As long as everybody can work more if they want (and get more money, that's how it works there...)
:flower:

HAHAHA Karl is such a diva... but this issue of France and its resistance to change keeps coming up from alot of folks... Tom Ford had the same problem as well... I don't see it in the collections though.
I have never been to Paris so I can't tell if this is true... For anybody who has been, are these people speaking the truth, or are they the ones that are suffering from tradition?

Well taking it from karl I don't know exactly what he meant one thing is for sure Paris is more about luxury and elegance and it always has been like that
I don't understand how come he compared paris and NY (they're completely different) while NY (it is clear) is much more exciting and fun

what did he meant with sayin Paris has no verve? the people or the city?
 maybe karl is letting out his frustrated years in paris working 35 hours and wants to go to live a life full of excess and "fast" life in NY ..finally

I think it's a protestant work ethic that is both very German and American. In American culture (and I think German as well) we are raised to put value on work, pride in productivity. For those in our upper and middle class it's not a matter of having to put in more hours but feeling guilty if you don't.

I agree with him about the workweek. If you want to get anything done, you can't work such short hours

but that's not fair to employers who have to pay people more for doing less work. how is that any way to run a business??

Unless you're making way below minimum wage no one needs to be complaining about a 35 hour work week, that is barely considered full-time (in the US anyway).

And yes... Karl does seem like quite a rambly person...

What is funny is that some people really don't have a lot of hours. My aunt is a teacher, (high school teacher), basically if you pass an exam (the "agrégation"), you get 3K Euros a month and work... 15 hours a week. He! Pretty much well paid for the hours no?
About the healthcare: they are said to be very good (like in scandinavian countries). Everything is free (even big big things), you don't have to wait a lot (unlike in England). That's not tipically french though... Switzerland/etc have the same system ^_^

That sounds nice! ^_^

Anyways, perhaps Karl is at that age where complaining, for a lack of a better word, is a part of everyday life. My grandmother does that very much.

Although I truly believe he's a clever man, he's getting old..
He was on a lot of public talks on french TV recenlty
Always telling the same things "fat people have no motivation" "don't know why people eat chocolate or butter: it gives you diseases"
Which is sad... he can do better

(<cynical> I'm pretty sure not having sex for decades has driven him mad </cynical>)

Isn't he saying that he rests 35hrs a week? Not work 35hrs a week?

^ yes, that's exactly what he says..

being a workacholic is essential for people who dont find much enjoyment in living their life

Oh my God, that's unbelievable. He's a designer, he should design, that's why he is here, not to make unreasonable comments. You are not here to talk, educated people who have a brain do that. Thank you.

p.s i wouldn't care less if he prefered Uganda to Paris. I'm sure they are crying in Paris now.

I would like to hear what the others CHANEL's employees have to say about it, those who are not paid millions & millions per year to draw the same little black dress since 20 years, those who have to stay overnight (35 hours or not, kids or not) just because Karla wants suddenly to change his little black dress in.... white, those who are not lucky enough to have a house in Monaco to not pay taxes or -worst- those who are overweight.

Karl should trade for one day his job with a girl behind the desk at the Postoffice or a supermarket.

Maybe he would change his mind and keep his mouth shut.

i agree, and i equally like his restlessness and attitude to take on and remake things....its inspiring.

I agree! There is something restless about him. In all interviews I have seen he talks fast and flits from topic to topic and is very very astute. I think he looks like a charicature but that is no reason to assume he is one.

And I agree with him about France. I am a total Francophile but there isn't a buzz about that nation and there hasn't been during my lifetime... not like the France you read about in history books or the French authors and poets and philosophers. Paris is an utter dump but my parents (one of whom is a French national) swear that it wasn't like that 20 years ago... seems they have let such a great city slide into ruin. My parents also say that it is the opposite with Rome. I know how Rome sparkles these days and apparently the authorities have cleaned it up a lot.

God, don't even pronounce this word in front of me  !

Pff!!!!
If Paris is a ruin for you SiennaInLondon & your nostalgic parents maybe you should invite Karl to join you . After all, London fits pretty well with the old queens, isn't it? ;)

^ everyone is perefectly entitled to their own views, respect is totally chic

personally i find Paris a tiny bit 'depressed' lately but it has to do with economic reasons, all europe seems a bit 'down' following the euro's race with the dollar..

^ you can say that again.. at his age and his economic statue, this guy should stop working alltogether and leave space for some new talents out there

he's been holding from his job(s) as if there is no tomorrow
