Kate Betts - Editor

I didn't realize that Vogue was so much more colourful back then.

VOGUE's VIEW: Remodeling Mod
US VOGUE JUNE 1995
Runway Photographers: Roxanne Lowit & Guy Marineau
Fashion Editor: Katherine Betts

Bullseye! I was really nuts about the Mod Revival of the mid 90s and the whole influence of 60s mod culture and music that came with it. I was the only rocking the tweed jacket, cobalt blue turtleneck, black boots & kohl rimmed eyes a la Anna Sui in high school. Here, I love the clever incorporation of the mod roundel into the layout which intermingles with the mod runway/archival images. Echoes of Mod fashion can be seen in the skinhead/straight edge/emo fashion of the 80,90s and 00s.

there's not really a thread dedicated to magazine layout/design etc but this is one of my favorite beauty spreads from Betts era HB. the images were actually reversed in the original layout. i have this issue and the contents don't list this story altho i know i did tear this out to scan but can't find it....

HB at times looked more like a design magazine than fashion zine; sometimes a bit too clean & compartmentalized, sterile almost but pleasing to look at nonetheless. there's a tactile quality to the beauty stills and while i'm not a magazine design expert, it's apparent to me that a lot of thought/talent went into creating a magazine with such efficient yet imaginative layouts and cohesive design, image and text unity which has been lacking in HB for sooo long:

One of my favorite feature photos from Betts era HB. I love the way this image in all it's light soaked, mistiness, obscures faces and in doing so beautifully captures Consuelo's vision for MARNI. so elegant. Even the small print text credits on the side was thoughtfully laid over the image in white lettering. Gorgeous typefaces sing thanks to the breezy readability, text organization and clarity.

Glenda and co are so fixated on doing these sweeping, grandiose, gimmicky editorial spreads that they lose sight of subtleties, small details which tie the images and layout together and for me makes these images linger in my mind a decade later.

Kate's HB is very under-appreciated which I never understood. Her short-lived HB brings to mind Carla Sozzani's magical Italian ELLE.

PS Please be considerate and link back to this post, outside of TFS.

I really admire her writing, and didn't find her Bazaar too bad; it was really difficult having to follow in the footsteps of Liz Tilberis who is just so revered.

I think she's perfect at Time.
Her Bazaar was underrated! Thats how every fashion magazines these days look.
I wonder what could’ve happened if Kate was still Anna’s 2nd on command in Vogue.
