Kate Moss avoids the camera by running into a London pub but there's no mistaking her - or the pleased look on the face of her mystery companion.

Four months ago, when I queued up with 2,000 other overexcited women outside Top Shop's flagship store on Oxford Street for the launch of Kate Moss's first collection, I was sorely disappointed.

Not only did I have to wait four hours for my turn to buy a maximum of five items, in a ludicrously panicinducing 20 minutes, before being ejected from the store, I ended up spending £255 on a frankly hideous amount of tat (even the black Lurex mini dress, which had looked great on the cover of Vogue, in my hands resembled a synthetic rag). I have always found it far easier to spend lots in a High Street store (everything seems cheap, so you just keep piling things on your arm) than in a designer one, where you are terrified not only of the assistants but of the possibility your credit card will be haughtily cut in two.

However, like many of the young women I spoke to outside the store that night, I felt I had been caught up in the disproportionate amount of hype spun by the fashion Press who, for reasons I don't fully understand, believe Kate can do no wrong. But, whether I have mellowed (doubtful), or Ms Moss has learned her lesson and tried harder (in light of the fact she has been dropped as the face of numerous designer labels, probable), the brand-new capsule collection for autumn (her third), that will hit stores this Friday, is much, much better.

The difference this time is that, rather than just rummage through the piles of clothes on her bedroom floor (I get the feeling Kate isn't tidy) for influences, she has instead looked to the catwalk, grabbed the key looks she likes (preppy, punk, metallics, mannish tailoring) and given them her own twist.
I wouldn't queue for four hours to snap up these new designs, but I would certainly pop into Top Shop in my lunch hour for three or four key pieces.
What do I love?

The silk chiffon dress slashed to the waist and with a scooped hem is pretty, and not too short and girly. The one-shouldered version comes in a very now colour, emerald, but at £120 I wonder if this isn't too steep a price for Top Shop's core, teenage customers.

The sight of Kate Moss in dark indigo kick jeans will wean even the most hardened skinny jeans devotee off the drainpipes, and although they are £50, expensive for the High Street, they are good quality.

The high-waist, wide-legged caramel tweed trousers are well-cut, not at all scratchy and flattering if, like Kate, you have a long trunk and short legs.
I also like the billowing pirate shirts, black trench, metallic vests (Kate likes her vests), fine jersey T-shirts with beading and rainbow-coloured mini sweater dresses. Less successful are the accessories: the shoes, boots and tiny beaded bags look and feel rather cheap and I can't see Kate wearing them off-duty.

I feel I have seen some items absolutely everywhere on the High Street already: the black halterneck with studded collar, for example, and the sequin flapper dress.

The maxi T- shirt dress could, I suppose, be worn as a nightie.
And why buy a plain white shirt and woollen tank top from Kate, when you could just copy the look for less by popping into Marks? On the whole, though, it's a vast improvement on the previous collections, and I look forward to her winter collection, which will arrive in stores in mid-October.
