Kate Moss: Why she's still at the top of her game as a supermodel
Kate Moss confirmed her place as the queen of the fashion world this week as she celebrates 20 years as a supermodel. Here, Lorraine Candy, Editor-in-Chief of Elle, gives her inside take on why Kate is still at the top.
With a flash of gold, a dash of black smoky eyeliner and sky-high heels, Kate Moss showed the world this week that she truly is the most stylish woman on the planet.
As the first model ever to host New York’s prestigious Costume Institute Gala the 35-year-old was more glamorous, more sexy and more fashionable than any other woman in the room.
And given the guest list included the world’s most successful supermodels, and Hollywood’s best-dressed stars, Moss’ fashion domination was extraordinary.
Elegant, individual and daring, she wore a metallic dress by her friend Marc Jacobs, with Yves Saint Laurent’s Tribute shoes and milliner Stephen Jones’
retro turban.
That night, Moss confirmed her status as the style queen and we got the message: “I’m not done yet.”
This year, Moss celebrates 20 years as a model. I would argue, having worked in the glossy magazine industry for more than 15 years, that she is the most successful model of all-time.
Her journey from Croydon schoolgirl to cover girl has been unstoppable.
Today she is the face of countless fashion and beauty advertising campaigns from Versace to Rimmel, she still graces magazine covers worldwide, she’s a designer who shifts product like no other on the high street and what Moss wears tonight defines the look of a million young women tomorrow night.
Neither the drugs scandal exposed by the Mirror that overshadowed her life four years ago or her relationship traumas has had any effect on the power of Kate.
I have met her briefly on many occasions and recently sat next to her in the front row of a catwalk show. In Paris this March I watched a crowd of paparazzi so big set on Moss in her seat that they almost pushed the models off the runway as the Chanel show began.
She was photographed for twice as long as another celebrity front row, seating Scarlett Johannson, Eva Herzigova, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Hudson. Such is the value of one picture of Kate!
In the flesh she is startlingly beautiful, other worldly. Her clear skin and tiny waist defies the party lifestyle she leads. There are few lines on her face and her body looks toned despite her abhorrence of exercise and love of Marlboro Lights and vodka and tonic.
So apart from hitting the genetic jackpot, what is her style secret? It’s simple. She loves clothes. “I don’t intellectualise them,” she says. “I just wear what is right for my body, what feels great.”
