Regular readers know that we’re fans of the long-length look when it comes to summer skirts and dresses. While the more body-conscious lines of that trend are suited to a monochromatic style, today’s maxi dresses allow for a little more expression.



First off, we’d like to encourage people to go for an ankle-grazing dress during the day. Collectively, we tend to think of long dresses as a night look, so there’s something unexpected about wearing a bright, patterned, long frock while the sun shines. Since you’ve got lots of fabric to work with, we suggest selecting a smaller print—save the bigger, bolder ones for your minis.

One of our favorite examples of the maxi dress is seen here on Joy Bryant (above, far right). She’s wearing J.Crew’s Talitha patchwork cotton dress, inspired by 60’s style icon Talitha Getty ($495, jcrew.com). The limited edition item has cross-back straps and is also available in white or tangerine linen ($298, jcrew.com).

Some other options include Topshop’s Embroidered Hem Maxi Dress in cream cotton, which looks like the perfect item for a sticky, hot day ($100, topshop.com). We’re also besotted with Tibi’s silk jersey, Constantine Strapless Maxi Dress in a pink and white floral print ($450, net-a-porter.com). Finally, there’s Juicy’s Long Halter Dress, it reminds us just a smidge of the dress Nicole has on above, right? ($210, ronherman.com)

Minimal effort and maximum effect—this trend is perfect for the summer!

I'm guessing those are Manolo Blahnik's. I saw them on sale at Neiman's, but they are all sold out. The Manolo store in Manhattan may still have them, but not necessarily in that color.
