THE ROSE AMONGST THE THORNS

THE perfume market may seem to have become saturated with celebrity scents of late, but Kate Moss attracted a share of media attention befitting a supermodel yesterday as she presented her first fragrance, named simply Kate. At the launch in Marrakesh, Moss explained she wanted the scent to have "a vintage English feel", and encompass both her "good" and "bad" sides. "I tried to encompass everything that I feel about being feminine and a bit rock 'n roll, a bit edgy and a bit light, a bit dark," she said of her perfume, which was created with Coty. Packaged in a sweet vintage-inspired flacon, Kate's motif is a black rose - in the advertising campaign, shot by Craig McDean, a naked Moss is seen playing coyly with the flower - with prominent thorns - in a field, highlighting the idea of a "dark" and "light" beauty. And for the doubters who questioned whether the Kate scent might have allure, the answer is a resounding yes; with base notes of patchouli and sandalwood mixed with rose petals, lily of the valley and forget me not, it's a gorgeous, light daytime scent.
