it's from a UK Vogue ed called "start me up", shot by juergen teller. somebody started a thread about this issue (may 2003) a while ago, and if you search for "start me up" in this thread you'll probably find it

My gosh. I think if I were her, I'd be a bit upset...it's cool to have a gold statue made out of your body, but that's a bit exaggerated in my opinion. But maybe that's the whole point. Does anyone know what it's for?

marc quinn said these sculptures (this one and the other ones of kate in yoga positions) are like "eggshells or cinema screens" for him, "sites for the projection of our desire, twisted mirrors to ourselves". he also said kate is someone "whose image has completely separated from her real self and this image has a life of its own" and that she's the Venus of our age. it was inspired by fasting Buddha statues (e.g. this one)

Im a HUGE fan of Kate. Ive loved for as long as I can remember, but this whole gold statue business kinda bugs me, all she did was stand in front of the camera and look pretty. Yeah she introduced a whole new beauty to the world, big deal, so could have another handful of millions of girls. It just shows how proud mankind is of himself, when really there are loads of other people who deserve to have a gold statue much more than Kate.

I think you've kind of missed the point.
If it helps, forget this is Kate Moss and instead just look at it as a sculpture of the anonymous beauty ideal of the 21st century.
I think artists are always drawn to Kate because in a way she is a blank canvas and you can project almost anything on to her. Its also worth remembering that Kates face has the golden ratio of 1.618 which artists have always loved

i don't think anyone deserves a gold statue. it's not the society who's making an homage to her, it's up to no one but the artist to "decide" (couldn't think of a better word. english is not my first language, as you can see) who is his muse, who inspires him, and a muse doesn't need to be a genius. in my opinion kate represents much more than a pretty face who just stands there in front of the camera. she represents a lifestyle and has one of the most interesting personalities of her generation, that's why she became an icon. she hasn't helped the poor and homeless people all over the world or anything like that but, for me, she's a symbol of non-hypocrisy.
that said, i'm not a fan of quinn's work. it's not really my style. he tries to make it too conceptual, and i prefer l'art pour l'art - especially nowadays, when people try so hard to conceptualize everything, even dance...
i've always thought kate was born to be a model (fashion model, artist's muse, whatever). her beauty is fascinating.
