Biographies of the very famous don't generally have many nail-biting moments.
But Laura Collins's fascinating, unauthorised Kate Moss: The Complete Picture opens with a chapter that suggests if she ever gives up the writing, she should consider a career in international espionage.
It is 16 January 2004 and Collins, a senior reporter for the Mail On Sunday, has decided to gatecrash Moss's 30th birthday party.

She books herself into Claridge's and waits at the bar as the guests arrive: Marianne Faithfull, Ronnie Wood, Sadie Frost, Naomi Campbell, Jefferson Hack.
She follows them up to the penthouse and, improbably, manages to squeeze past the bouncers. The next five hours are spent "chatting, laughing, smoking and drinking with this exclusive crowd".
She sees Sadie Frost straddling her boyfriend, Jackson Scott, on the bed, "her dress riding high about her thighs and drooping precariously at her shoulders".

She watches Janet Street-Porter rolling around drunk, while Kate screams, "Janet's such a f**king intellectual!"
She wonders, incredulously, "How could it be that in such a supposedly - even notoriously - tight circle of friends, a complete stranger could remain unchallenged?"
It was a remarkably brave thing to do, but then so was writing this book. Moss rarely speaks out; not only that, she's famously litigious.
Nevertheless, Collins manages to eke out an utterly compelling biography from clippings and quotes from the less discreet members of her circle.
It's so colourful you can only begin to imagine what she must have had to leave out.
We learn that when Moss began modelling, she would start on champagne at 10am and take shots of neat vodka from a silver hip flask.
In 1998, shortly after her split with Johnny Depp, she had an "out of control" romance with actor Jason Lake.
When Jeremy Clarkson approached her at a party and gushed that he "wanted her on Top Gear", she replied: "S'cuse me, mate, I don't care what type of gear you've got - I don't do drugs."
Moss comes across as immensely likeable, if not quite someone you'd ask to look after the kids.
Mostly, though, this is a celebration of the character traits that make her so fascinating: danger, glamour, decadence, sex, addiction, money.
Early on in the book, Kate demands: "Why the f**k can't I have fun all the time?"
It's hard to imagine a better toast to that than this sparkling biography.
