How do you "pick" clothes when thrifting?
ASH: I made a pact to myself a long time ago that I would not buy anything I would not wear. With that being said I have a HUGE shopping problem!!
What cameras did you use during your set with Kelley Ash?
AYER: My digital (Canon5d markII) and my medium format (MamiyaRZ)
Can you describe your style using only 3 words.
ASH: White trash gypsy.
Why do you prefer film over digital?
AYER: Film is more truthful than digital. I shoot with both, but there is something about holding a negative -- seeing the proof of light literally burned in emulsion --that can't be reproduced with digital photography. It's the tangibility I guess. That said, I also enjoy playing with the tension between the two.
How did you make your wardrobe selection for this set with Davis Ayer?
ASH: I ended up buying a **** ton of stuff on my way to Austin, stopping at every possible thrift/vintage store from Los angeles to Austin. My favorite was a pair of Calvin Klein overalls I found in Marfa and the Concho hat I got in Sedona, AZ. So basically I had all these clothes and everything I shot was literally just bought on the road.
How did you prepare for this shoot?
AYER: I Prepared by smoking a spliff and not thinking about the shoot. I completely rolled with it. I love the feeling of showing up to a shoot with nothing in mind, and forcing myself to work with the light and the location to create something new. Nothing exists until it does… so I like working on the fly.
What are your 5 favorite must have items you wear daily?
ASH: 1. My Maniamania Eternal ring, 2. Vintage crosses, 3. a smile, 4. Pamela Love Crystal necklace, 5. My Levis Denim jacket that some dude gave me outside of crossroads SCORE (it is really thin and has rips all over) with huge American Flag patch (I sewed the patch on) and my Stevie Nicks button. I live in LA so it gets chilly past 6pm.
