Lara Stone

All the new pictures are simply ooooooooooooooohhhhhh la la!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, everyone!

The problem of these pictures isn't simply that it is "blackface". The problem is that the pictures fall into the realm of exoticising another culture and playing into stereotypes about race. Whatever the photographers intent one cannot just overlook the blatant cultural appropriation that comes with this kind of imagery.

Ohh... if you liked that, then you will love this: #1922
I find that ed even more upsetting because it's not only some guy's fantasy about exoticism and "breaking barriers", but because it's something you get to see in real life a lot: The quintessential tourist gracing all the "exotic people" (read: different from him/her) with his/her condescending presence.

"Aww darling, this would look cute in our studio. It would bring a lot of conversation themes and it would show how adventurous and caring is our life and our persona". Pathetic.

I really, really like some isolated pictures of that editorial but the overall impression is greatly reduced -to me- by the things I've just commented
Please, please excuse me for going off topic... it won't happen again :p

Love Lara and expect to see her soon in the so talked-about February edition of VP.

lara's in the february 2009 issue of W

ph: Mert & Marcus
featuring: Amanda Laine, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Edita Vilkeviciute, Lara Stone & Sigrid Agren

i think this is the shoot that she almost broke her ankle for. it better be been worth it.

You guys are getting into complicated areas.

I understand what you're saying about the sort of colonial vibe from most of this photography ( Have you guys read ' Orientalism' by any chance?) but the territory can get pretty confused.

How do you expect them to deal with locations such as Africa, Asia etc. if you're going to put such strict parameters on the representation, such as NOT using white models because it suggests " colonialism"? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point.

Also, I don't agree that ed that Algama linked to is " some guy's fantasy about exoticism" or " The quintessential tourist gracing all the 'exotic people'" necessarily.
When I look at that ed, I see the model as representing Western aid, e.g a doctor working in, lets say, Somalia. Is that wrong?? Not in my books. It's real life.

Your view of the representation presented in ANY editorial is valid, but I think it needs to be remembered that everyone sees things differently and the photog has a vision that may not be what you pick up on.
