Lara Stone for CK Beauty: Photographed by David Sims
The kids at TI's sister site frillr.com just posted this hot to death shot of Ms Lara Stone profiling for the CK beauty line. How jealous are we of that scoop. TI loves Lara Stone. Not just for the modeling thing but because she's so...not worried. A friend of mine who worked the door at The Box told me about the night Lara showed up in typical "whatever" style." Whatever " jeans, "whatever" T-shirt. Scuffed kicks. Lank hair. Very East Village 1994. But its Lara Stone, so of course he sweeps her in. One of the managers stomps up to him seconds later and yells " Who was that grungy chick? Why'd you let her in!" My friend answered "Go stand at the corner of Lafayette and Broadway and look up at the CK Jeans billboard . That might give you a clue" . Classic Lara. There are girls who have been working for all of two years who are already calling from the back seat of their cars commanding that they're not into shooting today and could the car please turn around and take them back home. But not Lara. She knows what it is like not to be most wanted. She commits to the camera each and every time. Runway is another question but she's the first to tell you it is not a great love of hers. We Q+A'd her for Spur this summer and she kept it so real. Here are some choice moments of Lara's dry dry humor.
WS: How long have you been modeling Lara?
LS: Too long (laughs). For about seven years now starting from 2000.
WS: What changed in those six years that made the Fall 2006 season such a big breakthrough for you?
LS: My new agency.
WS: Good answer!
LS: Honestly I never tried to research or calculate my career. Before 2006 I would do Miu-Miu I would only get shows in Paris...that was when I had just changed agencies... I did a couple of little shows and the Miu Miu which was great . Then I did the Givenchy couture show and the next season I did tons of shows.
WS: Did that take you by surprise.
LS: Of course. They say I walk on the runway like Lurch and I wasn't 14 anymore so of course it was a surprise.
WS: Is there any other aspect of the fashion industry you like. Are you perhaps interested in exploring photography...styling...design...
LS: I'm just not really creative so I don't think so... I think I would be bad at all of that.
WS: When you were growing up what was your career dream then?.
LS: Its been such a long time I can't remember anymore. Now what did I want to be when I was little. A doctor...a pilot..I don't think that's going to happen now..
WS:Top model is not such a bad consolation prize.
LS: I'm pretty happy with that. Its so much fun to wake up everyday and be a whole different personality with the hair and make-up and the clothes and traveling all over the world.
WS:When you're Off Duty from work and not traveling the world, what do you do Lara?
LS: I sleep.
WS:Spoken like a true fashion person.
LS: No. (laughs)I go to the gym and I hang out with my friends and go on trips. I go and see my family. They were just here for two weeks. My parents that is. It was really nice. Because its so crazy with the airplanes and the jet lag.
WS: Do you get recognized on the streets now?
LS: Its happened only once. It was the weirdest thing in the world. I was on Bleeker Street with my little sister and this guy just ran up and starting freaking out. I almost had a heart attack.
WS: He started screaming your name?
LS: It wasn't that bad. Thank God. But it was strange
WS: I guess Lara Stone has no dreams of being a paparazzi star.
LS: Oh no!
WS: Well what if this movie producer were to come up to you at a dinner party and ask you to read for a part in a sci-fi film?
LS: To be a big alien in a sci-fi movie.(laughs) I'm really scared of cameras, not still cameras ...I have no problems with that... but video and motion cameras.... I'd really like to try but I'd have a hard time being comfortable on camera. I think I look funny and move funny on video. Like the other day this hairdresser was showing me runway footage and was like “There you are” and it was horrible!
WS: It is a pretty brilliant style of horrible to be.
LS:I guess. But I can't see myself. In photographs they can remake me into a different person but on the runway I'm a little bit more self-conscious of being me..
WS: Are there particular pictures of yourself you like.
LS: I love being in Inez and Vinoodh pictures. I think they're really cool. They always come up with a nice concept and they're so easy to work with. They shot the Givenchy I did with Hilary Rhoda . So I always like what they do. I always prefer if a picture is in black and white. I'm happier in black and white . It was fun to work with Vlada for Max Mara too.
WS: What was it like working for one of the biggest brands in the world, Calvin Klein.
LS: That was so scary. I was really nervous and really excited but I think its going to be really beautiful, like a traditional Calvin Klein jeans campaign. I haven't seen the pictures yet. I saw the beauty campaign and that was beautiful.
WS: Is there a big star you'd like to meet socially or at one of the shows?
LS: No. I couldn't care less. When I was... I dunno...16 and I was living in Paris and being taken to all these dinners with all these people, my friends would be like “Oh-My-God-Look, Mick Jagger's sitting right next to you” and I would be like...”Really...who's that?”
WS:A lot of people become models because they want to date celebrities. I won't name names.
LS: I can guess who they are (laughs) but no. I just like working. I've not worked and I've worked a lot and working a lot is better. I like being busy. I like being in beautiful magazines and I love working with great photographers like Steven Meisel and Inez and Vinoodh and that's enough for me. I don't want to be a celebrity or date celebrities. I just want to be a model who works a lot for a long time. For as long as they want me.
WS: Well thank you for living out the truth of that Lara. Its why I think you're one of the coolest girls on the scene right this minute.
LS: Thank you !
No, thank you Lara. You're fun. This Q+A is on video. I would love to show it you one day but Lara really and truly hates video. I usually just turn the camera on and leave it running on the other side of the room with the subject in close-up. (I watched all them willfully bad Warhol movies y'know )Lara figured out a clever way of edging her face off-frame so that half the time I taped half her head. Now there's a true model for you... In other superficial, empty and idle modeling industry news..TI has sorted out three of the Prada exclusives slated to walk out this evening in Milan but who is this mystery girl -never seen before in NY-with no Milan representation who got flown in at the last minute in a cloud of breathless excitement? She must be really something no? Gucci has two of last season's campaign queens on exclusive but that's very predictable of them. Guess they don't love the amusing wobble of the novices the way Miuccia does. I am to get a direct update from the Prada backstage tmmrw eve so stay tuned. Its the Superbowl moment of the SS 08 show castings.
