I thought when browsing her thread, people were referring ANTM as Australia's next top model. Because I don't remember her from ANTM at all, and I didn't believe an ANTM alumni would be this successful. But yeah, I did a simple google search and only found out that she was indeed in ANTM. What a surprise.

Leela Goldkuhl Is Not Just Another Reality TV Star Turned Model

Entrée into Riccardo Tisci’s Givenchy girl gang can take a model from unknown to buzz-worthy overnight. Over the years, Tisci has helped to launch the careers of everyone from Joan Smalls to perennial muse Mariacarla Boscono, so when he singles out a new face, it tends to bode well for her future. The latest beauty to catch Tisci’s eye? Leela Goldkuhl, a 21-year-old University of Rhode Island student who first made waves on the small screen after appearing in the 19th season of America’s Next Top Model. But in the years since her television debut she’s pulled off a leap few reality alums ever make (barring, of course, the Hadids and the Kardashian-Jenners)—a successful transition into high fashion. Here’s what you need to know about the next big thing:

Don’t expect to see her on another reality show.

“Being filmed constantly is invasive and very odd. I’m not into a ton of people staring at me all the time, so being on television was strange for me. I didn’t love it, because it made me anxious at first, but now that I look back I realize that it was a cool experience and led me to meet people who got me to where I am now. I can appreciate the experience more now that it is over. When you’re being filmed, you have to consider ‘how do you behave naturally,’ especially when you’re in situations with people who aren’t behaving naturally. It puts you in this odd little bubble.”
Givenchy was her very first Fashion Week experience.
“It was so crazy, my first Fashion Week, and as I was going to castings, I saw Givenchy on my list, and that made me both excited and nervous. Riccardo immediately wanted to get a lockdown on an exclusive with me, and that was so overwhelming.

I found the actual show to be thrilling; when you’re with the team and hearing the ideas behind everything, it is fascinating. So much goes into putting a show together that you have to be honored to be a part of the experience. I wasn’t nervous when I walked out; I was just happy and focused on that moment. It’s amazing to realize how many people were tuning in on the live feed or even watching it right there in the audience.”

Her focus, pre-fashion? Marine biology.

“I thought I knew about fashion, but now that I’m surrounded by it I realize how little I actually knew. After I did Top Model, I switched my major from marine biology, which I loved, to fashion merchandising, because I wanted to know more about the industry and educate myself. I didn’t love those classes as much as marine biology, but it was helpful just to learn the terminology and understand what everyone was talking about. A lot of times you can fake it till you make it, but ultimately you want to be able to engage in a meaningful way.”

But she wishes she’d started a little earlier.

“I wish I knew that I could have done it before. I put off modeling for so long, which is why I ended up doing the show. I didn’t know that you just go see agencies, and if they like you, they’ll sign you. On the one hand, I’m glad I was able to grow up and have that teenage period, but I wish I hadn’t been so scared about actually starting modeling and had pursued it a little earlier. Looking back, I’m like, ‘Oh, this isn’t so scary!’”

Her friends back home are still getting the hang of fashion.

“Half the time they don’t get it. With Givenchy they don’t even know how to pronounce it—I want to correct them, but I don’t want to sound like a jerk! They’ve been so supportive, though, and understanding of when I have to fly out or spend a lot of time on the road—I don’t think I could do this without all their encouragement.”

An alum of the original America’s Next Top Model, Goldkuhl got the Tyra experience firsthand during the show’s 19th cycle back in 2012. Making it all the way to the final round, Goldkuhl came in third. But it was years after the season wrapped that she experienced her biggest win: At Givenchy’s Spring 2016 New York show, Goldkuhl snagged one of the coveted exclusives and made her runway debut alongside icons like Mariacarla Boscono and Raquel Zimmermann. Riccardo Tisci liked Goldkuhl’s refined look so much, he told CNN postshow that he was planning to use her for the brand’s next campaign.

The start of 2016 may represent different kinds of renewal for all of us, but for Carine Roitfeld, it signifies the rebirth of the "American girl," encapsulated by today's top models. The forthcoming 8th issue of CR Fashion Book will include a special edition zine called CR Girls 2016 with this year's installment of the fashion powerhouse's favorite models, like Gigi Hadid and Leela Goldkuhl.

This edition spotlights the It girls in Americana-themed photos donning only Yeezy Season 2 and Gianvito Rossi. "My dream for this issue was to play with pop culture ideas of the American girl to create something brand-new," Roitfeld said in a press release.
