MTV presenter Lilah Parsons: I had an amazing time modelling but I wanted to do something with longevity
Imagine if the world was taken over by MTV presenters, each as cute, funny and fresh as the other. It would be fun – and utterly exhausting. The latest addition to the stable, model Lilah Parsons, is looking forward to every second.
Looking more than a little like a sexy Zooey Deschanel, long-limbed Parsons is no stranger to the spotlight, having already fronted campaigns for brands such as Chanel and Swatch. She’s presenting This Week’s MTV Top 20 on Sundays as well as MTV Asks.
When we speak, she’s just back from hosting Austria’s Snowbombing festival in Mayrhofen, her first festival as a presenter. Her last night was spent raving to DJ A.Skillz in a mountain top igloo known as the Arctic Disco.
Talk about going in at the deep end. ‘I’m feeling a little bit broken,’ she admits, huskily. ‘It’s been a hectic week. If it sounds like I’ve been partying madly, it’s because I definitely have.’
Pre-MTV, modelling came easy to Parsons. Five years ago she was spotted at a party in east London. She was 20. ‘A lady came up to me and basically said: “I’m going to change your life.” ‘Which was quite full-on but… she grabbed me by the hand and introduced me to a couple of people who became my agents.’ Six weeks later, Parsons was shooting for Chanel and walking for Vivienne Westwood.
‘I still remember people saying: “Wow, you did Vivienne Westwood. That’s amazing,” and I said: “How did you know?” And they said: “It was on style.com.” And I was like: “What’s style.com?”
‘It was terrifying, next to all these big models,’ she says of that first catwalk show. ‘I remember thinking: “Oh my God, that model really looks like Coco Rocha” – and then realising it was probably was her.’
Presenting arrived as a career choice when Parsons realised that she actually enjoyed working with film crews more than photographers. The first screen test she got was with MTV, whose tests are legendary because the basic requirements seem to be to let rip as much as possible, while following an autocue – which isn’t as easy as it sounds.
‘Basically, they ask you lots of questions which you answer to camera,’ says Parsons. ‘They made us do a joke, do a dance, answer lots of questions about music. I think they are just trying to get your personality across on camera.’
It suits Parsons. ‘I did modelling full time for four years, I travelled a fair bit, I had an amazing time but I just wanted to do something with a bit more scope, a bit of longevity. Plus,’ she laughs, ‘I like being able to talk.’
What’s coming up? Well, she’ll be at festivals with MTV over the summer – every 25-year-old’s dream scenario. Surprisingly, for someone who knows her tunes, Parsons hasn’t been to Glastonbury yet.
‘It’s a good way to start,’ she laughs.
HUNGRY: LILAH PARSONS
“What’s worse than being raped by Jack the Ripper’, asks Lilah Parsons, the newest face of MTV. ‘Being fingered by Captain Hook.’
This is quickly followed by choruses of ‘sorry, I’m so sorry, I was asked to tell a joke in my MTV audition and that was the only thing I could think of. I don’t know what came over me.’
25-year-old Lilah has recently been signed to MTV to present weekly shows This Week’s Top 20 and MTV Asks, following in the illustrious footsteps of the likes of Laura Whitmore and Alexa Chung. ‘I had to dance on camera in my audition too so I did Gangnam Style, I think that’s when they realised that I don’t mind making an idiot out of myself,’ says the former model who has walked for Vivienne Westwood and shot for Chanel in Coco Chanel’s Parisian apartment.
Although her modelling career was going from strength to strength, it is now very much taking a backseat. “I’ve come from an industry that is solely based on looks but now I’m judged on talent and what I’ve got to say. It’s refreshing being judged on what I can offer intellectually – even if that does sound silly coming from MTV.’
“But I’m hungry for success, and I’m prepared to work very hard for it. I know where I want to be, now I just have to get there.”
