She has defined a new age of fashion and been dubbed “China’s first-ever supermodel”, meet Liu Wen – Stylist’s incredible cover star.
Talking to Liu Wen on the set at the cover shoot for Stylist’s S/S 2015 fashion issue, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that you’re in the presence of one of fashion’s most influential people. Dressed in jeans and a Uniqlo top, she’s smiling and patient as the team get to work. But Wen is, in fact, the face of a global revolution.
Thanks to China’s consumer market now dictating how the industry works, Wen has become the face of a brand new era. In 2014, she was named as the world’s fifth highest-paid model by Forbes - the first Asian model to ever appear on the list. Wen also became the first Asian face of Estee Lauder in 2010 and is considered one of the world’s leading models on social media – she has nearly 9million followers on Weibo (the Chinese version of Twitter) alone.
Wen’s career, which began accidentally when she entered a modeling competition in her native Hunan province aged 17 in order to win a computer, consumes her life. When she arrived in New York aged 20, the stylists backstage helped her to pick up the new language: “I was very shy but everyone smiled at me and chatted so I learnt the words from them.” She went on to make her debut at Burberry’s February 2008 show – two years later she appeared over 70 ready-to-wear shows (making her that season’s second most booked model).
On Stylist’s shoot, it’s fascinating to watch Wen work. She quickly transforms from a kind, unassuming girl to a rock goddess in waiting. Then, once the makeup is removed and the jewellery reluctantly put away (“I’ve never seen glamorous tomboy rings like these,” she says), Wen says goodbye to every single person in the studio, before heading off to tweet about the day’s events.
