madison stubbington is winning over the fashion world with her rare look and positive vibe
Meet the amazing model who began her career with a small-town competition
In the commonly commercially-driven world of fashion, it's the moments of pure creative genius which punctuate the seasons - the shows or shoots that reaffirm legendary talent and truly define the style of the moment - which inspire everyone to push harder and do better. Right now Madison Stubbington is central to many of these groundbreaking moments and everyone is asking about the girl with the fiery red hair and face that defies definition.
Since being discovered at 14 in a modeling competition in her small home-town of Adelaide, Madison has appeared in shoots co-ordinated by Grace Coddington, films curated by Kate Moss, and walked for Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent in her very first season. She has a unique look that seems at times classic and at others very modern and it's her ability to adapt, as well as her positively professional attitude, that have made Madison a force to be reckoned with.
It has been a huge year for you, congratulations!
Thank you so much! It has definitely been a whirlwind year, full of unforgettable moments that I could never have imagined being a part of.
What's been your favourite part of 2014?
Taking part in my very first fashion week! It was definitely one of the most crazy, tiring, and rewarding times of my life.
Can you tell us about the most elaborate or exciting fashion show you've been involved in.
Without a doubt, Jean Paul Gaultier's' last Ready To Wear show! The show was held in a grand French theatre with dancers, handsome male models, amazing hair and makeup and top models such as Coco Rocha, Karlie Kloss, Lindsey Wixson, Joan Smalls, Sasha Luss...plus so many more. It was an amazing event, topped off with a finale full of gold confetti and a dance routine. I'm so honoured that I was part of it.
Have you found the modelling industry to be a supportive one? Have there been people who've taken you under their wing?
Yes, absolutely. My bookers and agents look after me very well, they are there whenever I need them and are always checking in to see how I'm doing and offering words of wisdom. I also came across other models when I first started that took the time to make sure I was comfortable and knew all the helpful tips.
The cities you're working in are a far cry from your home town of Adelaide, what's been the biggest adjustment?
The biggest adjustment had to have been been the fact that I was suddenly having to do all the things my parents would usually do for me. But thankfully I picked up all the duties fairly quickly. To help with adjusting to my new surroundings I always make sure to do a Google search before I go. Then when I arrive, and if I have time, I like to go out and explore.
What do you miss most about Adelaide while you're away?
My family and friends mainly. But I also miss Adelaide's intimate and simpler life.
Where's been your favourite place to visit?
New York. I can't exactly explain why it's my favourite, but what helps is the fact that it's an English speaking city and the bustling streets have such a nice vibe.
What are your passions and or hobbies?
I love cooking, reading, shopping...spending time with family and friends...I'm too cliché.
You are often noted for your incredible colourings. Was there a time when you didn't see it as such a blessing?
My school years were probably the only time I didn't like my hair. But it's not that I got teased, I think it was just the thought that I stood out and was an easy target for taunts...so therefore I became self conscious. Now though I'm much more confident in myself, and that's because I've embraced my hair colour...I've learnt that it makes me stand out in a good way!
What are three things people don't know but would like to know about you?
1. I make a damn good curry.
2. I consume a jar or two of peanut butter a week.
3. My favourite smell/feeling is clean sheets.
We understand there may be some acting in your future. Can you tell us about what you have in the works?
I had never considered acting an option - mostly because I was never good at drama in high school - so I was surprised when the opportunity to read scripts for two up and coming movies arose: The Little Mermaid remake and Pirates of the Caribbean 5. For now though it has only gone as far as reading the scripts...but who knows what the future holds!
Considering all the creative fields, who is someone you'd like to work with that you haven't yet?
Danny Roberts is an artist who does amazing drawings/paintings of models and the likes. I would be happy if he transformed a photo of mine into one of his art pieces. You should definitely check out his website.
Do you have a philosophy that you like to live by?
Take everyday as it comes.
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?
That Australia wasn't so far away from all the other countries I visit.
What are your plans for 2015?
You can't really set a plan in place for what I do which is difficult for me because I like to be organised, but one thing for sure is that I plan on it being a good year!
