Makeup counter pet peeves

being mauled by the perfume people.
OK, yes- this is probably the worst. Over the weekend, my friend and I were shopping and were literally attacked from all angles by differents saleswomen with spray bottles...all different scents too, of course. I felt like we were in some ninja movie and that I needed to do a few roundhouse kicks to get rid of them all. Instead we kindly accepted those paper swatches with the perfume sprayed on them. Somehow we still ended up smelling like a weird hybrid of Gwen Stefani's new perfume, some Michael Kors thing, a Marc Jacobs scent, and SJP's new one. FYI- these do not smell pretty when mixed. You get nothing but a headache and disapproving looks from strangers who have to plug their noses when they walk past you.

I have a few
1) Makeup artist with a really bad makeup on... You just can't trust those.
2) Alejandro's story about crazy women... That's just so gross! I usually just do some swatches on my hand to choose what i want and try to avoid putting it on my face. Or just buy online before reading loads of reviews.
3) too attentive sales people that won't leave you alone and try to make you buy more than you intended. Or the ones that watch you like you gonna steal something.

I hate it when they ignore you....especially at Chanel I find because I'm young (16 to be exact) they think I'm not going to buy anything, even though I will, and just basically ignore me. Soooo annoying.

I get ignored a lot... perhaps I don't always look like I want to buy something so I don't really have a problem with being ignored. but sometimes some sales people only chat amongst themselves and the customer has to wait a long time for them to finish their conversations...even when the customer is obviously wanting to ask questions/buy something.

that's why i rather go to sephora, the sales people will occasionally ask nicely if you need any help but they won't bug you any longer. i can take my time and won't feel pressured into buying something.

^ a sephora lady put like TONS of Bronzer on me and under the sun im orange :(

oh goodness i usually just stay away from makeup couters unless i know what i am going to buy because i'm a sucker for guilt-trips, I once wasted 25 minutes listening to a SA tell me about some new lipgloss line that i wasn't even plannign to buy and the whole time i had to come up with reasons i didn't want to buy anything ( i honestly have so many lipglosses and i don't even use them!)

also once i was shopping around alone and a guy SA literally grabbed me and put me in a chair and started showing me makeup samples and tried to go for my face and i literally said "Don't touch my face !!" so he slathered all the makeup on my hand (eyeshadows in powder and cream, lipglosses, even paintd some of my nails). and then he kept saying "you love it! don't you just love it !?" and i said "umm i guess so its alright" and he said "No no no you LOVE it let me hear you say it! this makeup is amazing you cant not love it !". so he forced me to say i loved it and then i couldn't not buy it. and also he guessed that I speak russian by my name and he's like i speak russian too ! how cool is that! and i love russian people because they know how to buy quality stuff! and this makeup is the best quality ! so then i found myself signing a no refund no return receipt and walkign away in a guilty daze carrying 85 bucks worth of makeup thats been sitting unopened in a drawer in my room for 3 months now....that is MY lesson. next time somethign like that happens, don't hesitate, just get up and walk away quickly.

When they don't know the product they are selling and are absolutely CERTAIN that they are right.

Like this week I went to Holt's and got a sample of the new Chloé perfume and asked if they had the new Marc Jacobs perfumes (Basil and errr Grapefruit? Can't remember). And she was like "there are no new perfumes. The newest perfume is Daisy."

And I'm like "Um, no. There are splashes that come out every year like Rain, Cotton, etc". and they even had them last year. She looked at me like she was crazy. Can't wait till they get them in so I can go in and say "HAHA, I was right".

I agree with most of what's been said already.

But most of all I hate that it is impossible to just test out products in peace. The other day I was at an abandoned Fresh counter and as soon as I tested a lipgloss the SA from another counter came rushing over asked if I needed help and I kindly said I was just browsing thank you. But she stayed there staring at me the whole time until I finally had to just leave. It feels very uncomfortable when they expect you to buy! buy! buy!

Also, I feel like now-a-days it is very rare that someone goes to a makeup counter completely clueless and unsure how to apply lipstick, you know? The role of makeup SA's are somewhat anachronistic to me as most customers are either browsing/testing or know exactly what they've come for. Besides, why take someone else's advice on what looks good on you??

i once walked into a makeup store with my sis and maybe i wasnt dressed up to the extent but the lady looked at me like i was poor :S wtf how would she know wether i have money or not? n then she asked to help me in a weird way n i said NOOO THNKS n then went to the lancome counter n bought my stack of supplies and the lady who was rude was lookign in shock. stuff her she didnt make the sales lol watta biatch.

^^^ I hate that. I especially hate when I'm passing through or browsing and have my uni bag with me and that happens. I get that they kinda have to watch people with big bags, 'coz it's easy to steal stuff and put it in there, but it makes me feel so guilty, even though I'm not doing anything! I feel like yelling, "Oh my god, I am not gonna steal anything, then I'd have to run and I don't run, I look sorta like a duck waddling and it would just make you laugh." Ranty rant.

^ Ohhhhhh definitely! Sometimes I just pop in after school with my huge bag and laptop.... I can't help it if I have to haul lots of crap with me now can I? And they look at you like you're gonna steal everything in sight just because you have a big bag

yeah exactly lol. it makes u feel like u r a criminal or a theif :S they should treat every one the same

That happens to me too. Usually beacause I go make up shopping after work because then I am already in the right place and don't need to travel at weekends. And they can be so rude and you know they are looking down at you. I hate that. I love it when they do that and I go and buy a couple of products. Ha that look on their faces.

haha yeah exactly Deborah i agree with you 100% its priceless to see the look on their faces hahaha

^ jesus. i hate that. sometimes i will walk into sephora or to a mac counter in comfy sweat pants or jeans and a t-shirt and my oversized banana republic handbag and i guess, since i am not dragging along a balenciaga or a valentino bag and wearing pumps they immediately assume that i am not going to buy anything, when i am for the most part! i hate that, that look that they give you, almost as if helping me pick something out would be a waste of time because at that very moment i don't look like a customer to them.

and when that happens, i usually buy everything i lay my eyes on and make sure that they realize that hey, i do have the money to buy all of this. the look of shock on their faces afterwards is pretty priceless. it's sort of like that scene from pretty woman.
