Makeup counter pet peeves

snobbish salesperson, like they're on top of the world, or give ridiculous tips......

^I agree!.
..it just bugs me when they look and act like witches.. some of them are so rude they don't even reply a 'hello'..

I remember this lady at the chanel counter, I was looking for powder blush.. I just said these two words and all of a sudden, she was applying the season's powder on my cheeks like a madwoman  . I didn't get upset about it, found it quite funny actually  .. but I do think it might get on some people's nerves to be so "persistent" about their sales.

I don't like when you're walking by and they spray you with the latest scent without asking! then I have to go the whole day smelling like sea shells or whatever.

yes! I HATE that!

hong kong is like even worse, they (esp those in a boutique or a high-end department store) just give u a poo face if they know u wont be likely buying anything (or try to full force to make u buy the stuff)... then when tourist (esp cough Caucasian cough, or anyone that look rich cough) comes by, they turn into like the world's best butt kisser ever.
u just look at them and like wtf :S:S

when the sales people have awful makeup on themselves..how am i supposed to take you seriously! luckily i usually know exactly what i want so i just ask for it when they help me but i hate buying powders and things like that where i have to get matched by them..its usually a little bit off. i dont think i have ever finished a powder compact.

and why do the MAC people with spider lashes always ask me if id like to try their mascara! well im assuming they are supposed to ask but i wouldnt want to after seeing their lashes.

On the whole, the SAs in stores in my rather rural area have always been pleasant - the only criticism I would have is that most of them don't seem to have received any 'education' when it comes to advising what colours might suit which skin tones. When I want to break out of a beauty rut and experiment with some new colours, I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that might not work once I get it home, so I'd appreciate the advice of an expert eye. But most of them don't seem to know the first thing about this.

What happens instead is that I'll spend the money on some bargain brand, where it won't make any real difference if the cheap shade of lipstick doesn't suit me when I get home. But that's a sale lost for Lancome or Chanel or whoever I'd rather have bought instead, risking an expensive mistake.

Once I had an SA at Sephora compliment me on my makeup and she asked what foundation I used. When I told her it was colorstay she about died saying that stuff is so cakey, chalky, dry, streaky, etc. I was like "hello, you just told me my makeup looked nice." And in fact, I can say that I can make colorstay look nice, I am quite talented at that :p

ok.

These sales people, depending on the stores, although they all run by the same comission slavery, they have to hustle.

Especially when they work for such expensive brands like Dior, Chanel or Clarins, other than those lines, they have to find a million ways to justify a $24 lipstick or a $125 face cream.

Unlike Lancome, Estee, Clinique or any of those GWP obsessed brands, they have it easy because they can buy up the customer easily by giving them a bag, but still, they want to make the most money, so they will drag you to the most expensive product and try to sell it to you, which leads me to believe these people aren't here really to give you a diagnose on what your skin really needs, but what the most proffit (sp?) might produce.

Samples are a way of attracting customers to buy, they dont care if you want to try it at home and see if it suits you before you buy, they wont give you a sample unless they have thousands of them.

MAC, its cheap, its cool, and you're buying the whole image, or so to speak; therefore, the SA's dont have to really give a damn that you're there, because they will achieve their goals very quickly, so basically, they dont really need the extra care of attention. If you find a person that works at MAC, and its nice to you, HOLD IT CLOSE TO YOU AND NEVER LET GO, cause those are rare. Or they're probaby after more of your money, haha.

Once you have proved to these people that you're loyal and you will buy from them forever, you got them on your good side. Samples, Evian water, free makeovers, are on your way.

But keeping them off is as easy as saying "Im just browsing at the moment, I will let you know when I have a question for you, thank you"

if they dont go away then that's just plain rude and annoying and you should contact the store manager; and thsoe dept stores have cameras up the butt, so they'll track up the annoying SA's. same thing with the fragrance dept, they want you to sell sell sell make goals higher goals, therefore these hags are in a group of 10 trying to feed their kids, of course they're gonna be agressive!...

so put yourself in their shoes and see how hungry for money these people are, then you'll now why they act like that.

MY pet peeve is people that try on makeup from the counters.

like foundations are almost fine, cause nobody sticks their fingers in them, and you can use a sponge, but its mostly lipsticks, lipglosses, and sometimes eyeshadows.

Some lines they have a sanitizing standard that they dip things in alcohol, like MAC, they will dip the lipstick tip into a dish with alcohol to sanitize, then rub it against a clean paper towel to give it an angled edge to the tip of it. Some of them wash their brushes some of them lightly spray them with alcohol. Either way, I could never go try anything at a makeup counter, nor get my makeup done, cause knowing the sh*t that goes down over there, you wouldn't even touch them.

I had this lady, she was crazy, I MEAN CRAZY, she would come into Dior with mini shorts, and she would grab the tester from the self tanner, and cover herself in selftanner, lift her leg in my counter to reach on her crackhead thighs and everything, leave a mess and go.

this other crazy lady would come in and try all of the lipsticks without asking anybody, and I would tell her straight off "lisent crazy betch get the fk out of here or i'lll call security" and she would smile at me with no teeth.

then she would keep adding on lipgloss after lipglosss.

then mascara... then eyeliner...

then before she leaves she screams at me " I HAVE AIDS!!! AIDSS!!!"

Seriously, I contacted headquarters and they shipped down some new testers by the end of the week, because we didn't have any new stuff in stock and we couldn't definitely let a scandal like that go light on us, even if it was a joke, we just can't.

so imagine the crazy stuff that goes on with the brushes, the makeup, and your SA won't tell you about.

I have no quibble with the idea that a salesperson is there to make a profit, but without cultivating a 'relationship' of sorts with the customer, there will be no repeat purchases - or in my case, no purchase at all.

So it's in the best interests of the SA (and their sales sheet) to know more about what works for my skin or my colouring than I do.

I think this is an eternal problem for all types of salespeople - do they go for the quick sale and get short-term results, or do they try to cultivate 'relationships' which yield long-term repeat custom.

 That is so gross. I don't think I'll ever be able to approach a makeup counter the same now. :yuk:

had, i dont work with Dior anymore.

Dior normally brings mini samples of fragrance, that always comes in bunches.

but they have samples of most skincare especially the Capture R60/80 line and Hydraction moisturizers. I still have boxes and boxes full of samples I took with me before I parted.

i hate it when you tell the SA the kind of scent you want or eyeshadow color, etc. and then they show you stuff that is just completely off and try to bully you into buying them....or when they are just plain snobby i seem to get that alot when i go shopping without my mother. hmmmm

I hate salespeople that make me feel cheap..."You're only going to buy ONE???"

"is that ALL?"

"Don't be so cheap!"

I seriously heard these....

I hate the ones who can't do makeup themselves but insist on doing your makeup anyway. That happened to me once, and I actually let her do it because I was shopping for a new foundation/powder and I didn't know which one to get and needed to sample a few. It was HORRIBLE. I looked HORRIBLE and I had her wash it off. :/ Never again.

I hate when the SA either asks you if you need help like 101 times even when you are just browsing. However, when you actually DO need help, you cannot find a SA!

The pressure that they put on you to buy more can be overwhelming too...especially for people like me who are easily swayed...even when I come into the store prepared with a list of just the things I need. At the end of the day, I do realize that they are just doing their jobs though.

And why is it that the makeup always looks better when they put it on you in the store than when you actually leave the store? It drives me nuts! Suddenly I get to my car and realize, "Eek! Because of that darn lighting, I now own orange lipstick!"

Over all most of the make up artists at the counter I've been with are rude/snobby or just ignore you. I've basically only had one good experience and that was at MAC where the woman was very friendly and didn't try and make me buy a hundred and one thing I don't want/need.
