Honestly, I don't hate this. I mean how could I? It's the most lively thing I've seen on a runway in months, at least as far as the clothing goes. Yes it's very throwaway, but since everything else is too I don't take much issue with that. They're good-time clothes for people who either love glitter and neon or who can afford to spend way too much money on novelty items.
And lets be honest, as much as everyone bemoans the tackiness of the 80s and how designers invariably go back to it over and over again, I think deep down we all know that it's probably because the 80s were the last time when genuine uniqueness, thriftiness, oddness and exuberance were actually the norm. Sure, we try nowadays with the likes of Alessandro Michele and whomever else is riding that "Look At How Idiosyncratic I Can Be" wave of commodified individuality, but it'll never top the 80s. It's too intentional now.
I don't know, in a world of DHL logo tees, $1,000 Alpha Industry knockoff bomber jackets, rickrack trim and jungle green guipure lace bermuda shorts this glitzy Gem and the Holograms go to the VMAs lineup doesn't really strike me as the most tacky or try-hard thing around.
